Vikings tie for first at Olivet Nazarene Invitational

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - In a meet that was billed as "NAIA vs. NCAA Division III Challenge", Augustana more than held its own at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational on Saturday, January 26 in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The Vikings tied for first place in the eight-team event, which featured four schools from the scholarship NAIA and four from the non-scholarship NCAA Division III.
Augustana and host Olivet Nazarene finished the meet deadlocked in first place with 163 points apiece. Aquinas was third with 122 while Calvin took fourth with 86.5. St. Ambrose (68), Greenville (43), Bethel-Indiana (32.5) and Benedictine (11) rounded out the field. Augustana, Calvin, Greenville and Benedictine were the NCAA Division III schools while Olivet Nazarene, Aquinas, St. Ambrose and Bethel were the NAIA representatives.
Veteran head coach Paul Olsen's Vikings won five events during the course of the meet.
Senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) was a busy man, winning the 200 in :22.03, taking second in the 60 in :07.01 and anchoring the 1600 relay to victory with a time of 3:20.04. He was joined on the 1600 relay by senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), sophomore Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) and sophomore David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.).
Patton won the 400 in :50.01 and Voland took the 60 high hurdles in :08.62. The other winner for Augustana came in the heptathlon where senior Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) scored 4,415 points to claim victory. Gale won three of the seven events in the heptathlon, taking the pole vault with a leap of 13' 5 ½". The 60 in :07.42 and the shot put with a toss of 39' 8".
The 3200 relay team of Dennis O'Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.), Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) placed second with a time of 7:55.88. Dal Pozzo took second in the 800 with a time of 1:57.07 while Gornick was third in the mile in 4:23.04 and O'Flaherty finished fourth in 4:25.68. Josh Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) was second in the heptathlon with 4,279 points.
The 800 relay team of Antonio Owens (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.), Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), Rob McNeil (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) placed third with a time of 1:32.12.
David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.) was third in the 60 in :07.04 and Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) was third in the 200 in :22.64. Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) and Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) tied for third in the pole vault with identical 14' 5 ¼" clearances.
Torre Harrell (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) recorded a mark of 22' 6 ½" for fourth place in the long jump. Alex Odenkirk (Ironwood Ridge HS, Tucson, Ariz.) finished fifth in the mile with a time of 4:25.78. Shay Hostens (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) was fifth in the heptathlon with 3825 points and Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) took sixth with 3722 points. Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21' 8 ¼" and Andrew Lulis (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) and Will Lardner (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) tied for sixth in the pole vault by clearing 13' 11 ¼".
