Vikings 4x1600 relay team tops chart in 2012

Keegan Buttimer anchored the Vikings' 4x1600 relay team to a nation's leading time of 17:26.29 at the Drake Relays in 2012.

The US Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association released its final list of award winners for the 2012 school year recently and Augustana's 4x1600 relay team was among the winners. The unit of Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.), Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.), Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Keegan Buttimer (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) recorded the fastest time in NCAA Division III last spring.

Smith was a junior at the time while Bowman and Keating were both seniors and Buttimer was a freshman. The quartet ran 17:26.29 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 27 to post the best time in the nation.

The Vikings also had two other relay teams that were not far from the nation's leading times during the last outdoor season.

The 4x100 relay team of freshman David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.), junior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) ran a school record :40.88 at the NCAA Division III national meet in the preliminary heats before finishing fourth in the nation with a finals time of :41.06. The time of :40.88 was just :00.52 off the fastest time of the year set by McMurry.

Augustana's 4x400 team of Patton, junior Dan Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and Rindone set a new school record of 3:10.70 in finishing second in the national meet. The Vikings' time ended up just :00.14 shy of being the fastest time in the nation. That was the 3:10.56 recorded by Rowan in winning the national title.
