| Sarahbeth Jones won team MVP honors for the second straight season as she led Augustana to a second place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in 2012. |
Sarahbeth Jones women's cross country MVP for the second straight season; Vikings win two invitationals; finish second in the CCIW and ninth at the Midwest Regional
Led by two-time team MVP Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Glen Allen, Va.), coach Fred Whiteside's Augustana cross country team brought home a second-place CCIW finish and a ninth-place finish at this year's NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. The Vikings, who were ninth in the final USTFCCCA Midwest Region rankings, also won the College of DuPage and St. Ambrose Invitationals, as well as their only dual meet vs. St. Ambrose.
Jones, who has been the top Augustana finisher in every race in which she competed for the last two years, won her second consecutive team MVP award. She ran a 21:40 to win the Brissman/Lundine Invitational on September 21, earning her second CCIW cross country "Athlete of the Week" award of the season. Her first came after a fifth-place 17:14 at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship in Normal, Illinois on September 14. Her third would come after a second-place finish at Rose-Hulman's Pre-National meet on October 6. While her teammates were busy winning the St. Ambrose Invitational title, Jones ran a 21:45 in Terre Haute, Indiana to finish second in a field of over 300 runners. In addition, she was 12th (22:15) among more than 500 competitors at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on October 14.
At the CCIW Championship on October 27, Jones battled leg cramps to finish fifth for the second year in a row and help Augustana to a second-place team finish, the program's best since 2000. Juniors Kristyn Barton (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and senior Kirstillyn Pohlman (Zion Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) captured top 20 finishes at the conference meet as well. The trio grabbed places 15 through 17, with Barton finishing in 23:26, Pohlman in 23:27 and Benge in 26:33. Sophomore Lizzie Lundine (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.) and seniors Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) and Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Joliet, Ill.) rounded out Whiteside's top seven. Lundine finished 22nd in 23:47. Heifner was 31st in 23:58 and Bistry finished 33rd in 24:00.
Led by Jones' 34th-place 22:46, the Vikings had four runners in the top 66 at the Midwest Regional in Winneconne, Wisconsin on November 10. Pohlman finished 56th with a time of 23:08. Benge was 61st in 23:14 and Bacon's 23:19 was good for 66th. Barton (24:35), Lundine (24:54) and Bistry (24:56) rounded out the Viking contingent, finishing 131st, 152nd and 154th, respectively.
With Jones running at Rose-Hulman, sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) came through with a winning 19:18 at the St. Ambrose Invitational on October 6. Barton's time of 19:25 earned her third place and Benge (19:30) and Pohlman (19:31) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, as the Vikings won the 10-team event.
Benge was the winner in Augustana's season-opening dual meet win over St. Ambrose. She completed the course at Moline, Illinois' Sylvan Island in 15:21 to claim individual honors.
The Vikings had seven top ten finishers to easily win the eight-team College of DuPage Invitational on September 28. Barton's 18:16 was good for second place, tops among Viking harriers. Bacon, Benge and Bistry finished fourth through sixth, running 18:29, 18:38 and 18:51, respectively. Pohlman (19:09), Lundine (19:11) and Heifner (19:23) came in eighth, ninth and 10th.
Other award winners for Augustana included Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.), who won her fourth straight "Erica Vortman Viking Spirit Award" and served as a captain along with fellow seniors Jones, Heifner and Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.). Pohlman and junior Katie Pittman (Mahomet-Seymour HS, Mahomet, Ill.) shared "Susan Wall Most Improved Runner" honors. Pittman was the Vikings' top finisher at the North Central Open, running a 14th-place 18:47. "Most Valuable Freshman" recognition went to Hana Lobsinger (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), Rachel Rodriguez (Mahomet-Seymour HS, Mahomet, Ill.) and Jeneen Schier (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.). Barton and junior Kristen Whiteside are captains-elect for the 2013 season.
