Vikings win 10 events in beating Monmouth

Senior Chris Greaves won the 100 freestyle with a time of :50.64 as Augustana beat Monmouth 162-63 on Friday, November 16 in the Carver Pool. The Vikings won a total of 10 events in their first dual meet competition of the 2012-13 season.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - In the first dual meet of the 2012-13 season Augustana rolled over Monmouth 162-63 on Friday, November 16 in the Carver Center Pool. The Vikings won a total of 10 events in posting the victory. They won both relays, both diving competitions and six individual swims.

Three Augustana athletes posted individual double victories during the meet. Freshman Adam Bernardi (Rockford Boylan Catholic HS, Belvidere, Ill.) won the 200 individual medley in 2:03.12 and came back and took the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.40. Sophomore Aaron Holt (Mount Vernon HS, Mount Vernon, Ill.) won the 50 freestyle with a time of :22.60 and the 100 backstroke in :55.04. Sophomore Josh Wielenga (School of Environmental Study, Apple Valley, Minn.) claimed the three meter diving with 191.50 points and the one meter board with 209.30 points.

Freshman David Sommers (Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, Calif.) grabbed the 100 butterfly in :53.71. Senior Chris Greaves (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) took the 100 freestyle in :50.64. Greaves was also third in the 1000 freestyle in 11:11.03.

The 200 medley relay team of freshman Felipe Hernandez (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), Bernardi, Sommers and junior Justin Reppy (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) started the meet with a win in a time of 1:45.42. The 200 freestyle unit of Holt, Greaves, sophomore Michael Duy (Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.) and junior Daniel Hinck (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) closed the meet with a victorious time of 1:30.47.

Duy placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.78) and 500 freestyle (5:03.45). Hinck was second in the 100 freestyle (:51.42) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:50.28). Hernandez finished second in the both the 200 individual medley (2:08.13) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.89). Reppy took third in the 500 freestyle in 5:10.02 and fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.96.

Junior Austin Zarbuck (Urbana HS, Urbana, Ill.) took second in the 1000 freestyle in 11:05.42 and fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.96. Sophomore Alex Putz (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) was second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.23) and fifth in the 1000 freestyle (11:39.25). Freshman Kyle Johnson (Shadow Mountain HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) finished second in the 100 backstroke in :58.22.

Sophomore Timothy Michaels (Pella Community HS, Pella, Iowa) placed third in the 50 freestyle (:24.41) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (:54.14). Junior Jasen Hengst (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.05 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.97. Freshman Austin Small (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.09. Sophomore Kyle Frake (Clifton Central HS, Clifton, Ill.) finished fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of :24.54. Junior Ryan Chaney (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.79.
