Christmas at Augustana to feature favorites, commissioned works
Annual show usually sells out; patrons urged to order tickets early
November 16, 2012
As part of its Celebration of Christmas, Augustana College will present its fifth annual performances of Christmas at Augustana at 8 p.m. Nov. 30 and 4 p.m. Dec. 1 in Centennial Hall (3703 7th Ave.). Tickets are $20 for the public, $16 for senior citizens and $10 for students and Augustana faculty/staff.
Christmas at Augustana has delighted audiences in sold-out performances of Christmas classics and commissioned pieces. With music presented by the Augustana Brass Ensemble, Augustana Choir, Cantilena Augustana, Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble, Augustana Symphony Orchestra and Wennerberg Men's Chorus, the concert offers something for everyone.
Dr. Jacob Bancks, assistant professor of music at Augustana, and composer Walter Pelz were commissioned to write pieces for this year's performances. Dr. Bancks' piece, a setting of O Magnum Mysterium, is a "masterpiece," according to Dr. Daniel Culver, professor of music and co-chair of the department of music at Augustana.
"It's a meditation that is beautifully written and will definitely have a big impact on the audience," he said.
The concert will end with the great fanfare of Pelz's arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High for combined choirs and orchestra.
"The Christmas concert brings many of the music ensembles together," said Lizzie Lundine '15, a music education major and orchestra member from Villa Park, Ill. "This combining of choirs, brass and orchestra brings more to the music than just notes and dynamics. There is a love for the season and a joy with friends and family. My family includes many Augustana College alumni, and they love to come back for this beautiful musical concert."
