Augustana vs. Illinois Wesleyan Preview
![]() |
| Sophomore wide receiver Torre Harrell hauls in a touchdown pass against Millikin earlier this year. Harrell and the Vikings take on Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Illinois Saturday. |
Augustana put 31 points on the board in the game's first 25 minutes and went on to a 38-13 win over Carthage at Ericson Field this past Saturday. The Viking defense did its part, forcing six Red Men turnovers, including a Bo Goshorn (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) interception that he returned for a touchdown. The win was Augustana's third in a row and gets the team to the .500 mark at 4-4. The Vikings are now 3-2 in the CCIW and tied for fourth place with Illinois Wesleyan. Augustana and the Titans meet Saturday, November 3 in Bloomington, Illinois.
After punting on their first series against Carthage, the Vikings scored on each of their next five possessions to take a 31-0 lead. Senior quarterback Nick Welch (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) threw a pair of first half touchdown passes to sophomores Antonio Owens (Naperville North HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Torre Harrell (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and added another to freshman Jawan Straughter (Plainfield East HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) early in the fourth quarter. Senior running back Brett McWilliams started the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run.
The Augustana defense allowed Carthage just 53 yards on 27 rushing attempts and are now allowing 152.0 rushing yards per game and just 3.6 per attempt. Opponents have competed 56.5 percent of their passes for an average of 240.1 yards per game. Junior linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), who entered the week tied for second in the nation in tackles, added 15 against the Red Men and now has 108 on the season. He leads the team with 60 solo stops, 48 assists and 13 tackles for loss and is second with four sacks. Goshorn's pick was his team-high fourth of the season. Sophomore defensive end Sean McIntyre (Genoa-Kingston HS, Genoa, Ill.) leads the team with eight sacks and is tied with junior linebacker Mike O'Donoghue (Mundelein HS Mundelein, Ill.) with a pair of fumble recoveries.
On offense, Welch has thrown for 1,049 yards and nine touchdowns this season, completing 80 of 137 (58.4 percent) pass attempts. He's been intercepted six times. Chandler is third in the CCIW in rushing and has 642 yards and five touchdowns on 90 carries (7.1 yards per carry) this season. McWilliams has carried 56 times for 391 yards (7.0 per carry) and four touchdowns. Junior Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), who is currently out with an injury, is tied with junior Kyle Snow (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) for the team lead with 18 receptions. Krantz's have gone for 329 yards and two touchdowns and Snow's for 192 yards and one score. Harrell has 16 grabs for 189 yards and three touchdowns and Owens 13 for 154 and one score.
Illinois Wesleyan won its first six games this year before falling 38-33 at Wheaton and 52-0 at North Central the last two weeks. The Titans are now tied for fourth place in the CCIW with Augustana at 3-2.
Defensively, IWU allows just 299.2 yards per game. Opponents are managing 116.4 rushing yards per game and 3.3 per carry and are completing 54.9 percent of their passes for 182.9 yards per contest. Defensive end Trey Cunningham was a second team All-CCIW pick a year ago.
On offense, Wesleyan is adjusting to the loss of quarterback Rob Gallik to injury. Tyrell Bolden, who has spent much of the year in the Titan defensive backfield, has shared time with Tyler Hook in Gallik's absence. Bolden has attempted just eight passes, completing three, but has rushed eight times for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Hook is 16 of 41 for 130 yards and has been intercepted four times. Running back T.J. Stinde has 495 yards and six touchdowns on 91 carries and Devonte Jones has carried 71 times for 260 yards. Alex Garvey is the Titans' top receiving threat with 43 catches for 663 yards and 10 touchdowns.

11/12/11-ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 34, AUGUSTANA 12
Vikings drop season finale 34-12 at IWU
BLOOMINGTON, Ill.-Augustana closed out the 2011 football season Saturday, dropping a 34-12 decision to Illinois Wesleyan at Tucci Field. The Vikings finish the year 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the CCIW. The Titans improve to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the CCIW.
Augustana missed a scoring opportunity early. The Vikings took the opening kickoff and went 59 yards in 10 plays before the drive stalled at the IWU 15-yard line. Brady Rogers (Cherokee Trail HS, Aurora, Colo.) came on, but his 32-yard field goal attempt was wide left and left the game scoreless.
The Titans responded by going 80 yards in 11 plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Rob Gallik to put the hosts ahead 6-0. Tony Angelos' point after attempt failed. Illinois Wesleyan intercepted quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) on the Vikings' next possession and went 38 yard in eight plays to extend the lead to 13-0. Gallik went in from three yards out for the score. The key play on the drive was a 15-yard personal foul call against Augustana.
Wesleyan pushed the lead to 20-0 early in the second quarter. After forcing a Viking three-and-out, Gallik took the Titans 75 yards in six plays, this time aided by defensive holding and personal foul calls against the defense. Gallik connected with Joey Driver from 11 yards out and Angelos' kick made it 20-0.
IWU made it 27-0 with 3:23 left in the half when Cameron Blossom scored on a three-yard run, capping an 18-play, 79-yard drive.
Freshman safety Tim Maroder (Burlington Central HS, Elgin, Ill.) picked off a Gallik pass on the first possession of the second half to set up Augustana's first score. Lee completed seven of eight passes on a 13-play 99-yard march, with the final one going to tight end Keith Abbey (Rich East HS, Park Forest, Ill.) for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Illinois Wesleyan extended the lead to 34-6 early in the fourth quarter when Gallik found Parker Carroll for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Lee finished the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run with 4:14 remaining.
In his final game, Lee finished 21 of 32 for 228 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. In addition, he had 19 yards and a touchdown rushing. Abbey, also a senior, caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown and classmate Zachary McCullough (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) caught three for 45 yards. Junior running back Brett McWilliams (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) was the Vikings' leading rusher with 42 yards on 11 carries and caught three passes for 36 yards as well.
Sophomore linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) led the defense with 13 total tackles--three solo and 10 assists. CCIW punting leader Arnie Fitzwater (Union HS, Waterford, Wis.) kicked four times for a 42.5-yard average.
