INTERESTED IN SERVICE LEARNING?
Research on service learning indicates that it promotes greater academic achievement and civic engagement. "Students report that they are motivated to work harder in service learning classes, experienced deeper understanding of subject matter and social issues, and were better able to apply classroom learning to real problems" (Brownell & Swaner, 2010, p. 25).
Faculty who would like to develop a course/section with a service learning designation can receive a $500.00 grant from the CEC to support their efforts. Brigitte McCray, a new faculty member in English, recently received this grant for two upcoming winter term courses. In LSFY 102 students will be working with residents of St. Anthony's, and in ENGL 208, the class will participate in St. John's WOW program.
If you are not quite ready for a full SL course, you can try-out service learning on a smaller scale. CEC staff can work with you to integrate service activities in your courses. For example, this fall in a two week time frame the students in COMM 384: Social Action Research gathered over 915 pounds of food and $270.00 to support the work of the River Bend Food Bank. Two modules in the Twenty Minute Mentor series can provide a foundation for incorporating these learning experiences.
For more information on service learning, contact Ellen Hay at x8614 to consider the possibilities.
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: COFFEE AND CONVERSATION
Join your colleagues on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the CEC space in Sorensen Hall for Coffee and Conversation. Talk to your colleagues and meet all the new faculty that have moved into Sorensen for the year. Enjoy a hot cup of Starbucks coffee ($1.50 for a 12 oz. cup of coffee, FREE for the first 10 people). Indulge in a sweet treat. Stop by as you are able. We look forward to seeing you Thursday!
AUGIE HUB
If you would like to access Augie Hub, our on-line career management system, go to Augie Hub and create an alumni account. Some have expressed concern about the volume of email blasts that they would receive if they register. First, there are very few email blasts that are sent to alumni. Second, you can opt out of all email communications in the privacy tab of your profile. Simiple select "no" to the first and third options. We are here to help you create an account. Please contact Lisa Slater, 309-794-7339 for assistance.
