During fall term, five LSFY 101 faculty have integrated the theme of citizenship in their classes by including service learning activities. Meg Gillette and Deke Gould had students tutor recent immigrants at literacy sites in Rock Island and Moline. Umme Al-Wazedi 's class served as Reading Buddies for the second graders at Longfellow. On two different Wednesday afternoons, Donna Hare 's students presented stories and did crafts with the children at the after-school reading program at the Rock Island Science and Math Academy. In Ann Boaden's section, students investigated Augustana's history of service to the local community and documented the founding of Micah House, a new partnership with St. John's Lutheran Church.
Norm Moline (Geography) has been appointed to the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council for the term 2013-2015. This fifteen-member Council meets three times a year to consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places and to advise the State Historic Preservation Officer on natters of importance. A Council of qualified professionals and effective citizen advocates is requried by the National Historic Preservation Act.
After receiving one of the service learning development grants from the CEC, Eric Stewart's RELG 207 students each spent over twenty hours serving Friendly House, the Place2Be, or Longfellow School. In a SOTL study, Eric plans to compare learning outcomes between this class and a section of the same class that did not include a service component.
Rowen Schussheim-Anderson (Art) had two artworks, "Crimson Prelude" and "butterflyte" juried into The 7th From Lausanne To Beijing' International Fiber Art Biennale to be held in Nantong City, Jiang Su Province, China from November 8 to December 15, 2012. With more than 300 pieces of fiber artworks from 37 countries. the exhibition is sponsored by Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University Nantong Municipal People's Government, China. The theme of the simultaneous academic symposium, encourages international communication and popularization of fiber art. The event enhances Chinese culture through creativity; stimulates the development of the information industry and provide an opportunity to demonstrate a new field of vision that is found and shared in the Biennale Exhibition and Symposium. The International Fiber Art Biennale began in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1962.

Doug Tschopp (EDGE Center) just finished his 10th year as Program Chair for HighEdWeb, a conference for web professionals in higher education. This year's conference brought about 700 people to Milwaukee for an intense few days of learning. Doug presented a half-day workshop, "Developing and Maintaining Web Content: An Idea Generating Workshop", which is an annual favorite of attendees. He also presented two other sessions, "Building a Strategic Plan" and "Card Sorting: Research That Every Web Developer Should Use".
Two students, Ben Fischer and Andy Shearouse, also attended the conference with Doug. They presented a poster, "Student Web Developers: A Win-Win for the Students and the Community", which many conference attendees found very engaging. They focused both on the successful path of the group to this point as well as future plans to expand their model. The opportunity for Augustana students to attend and present at this conference each year has been a pivotal experience for Web Guild leaders.
