Jones nails down another CCIW honor

Augustana senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) is putting a stranglehold on the "Runner of the Week" award in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in the sport of cross country. She has run three meets this season and has earned "Runner of the Week" by the CCIW after each one.
Her latest honor comes after a sparkling performance at the Pre-National Invitational at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. She finished second out of 326 runners with a time of 21:45.0 over the same 6,000 meter course that will host the NCAA Division III national meet in November. The only runner to defeat her was Hanna Oneda of Johns Hopkins who won with a time of 21:37.6.
She won her first honor after placing fifth at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship on September 14 at the D.A. Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Illinois. In that outing, she set a new Augustana school record for 5,000 meters with a time of 17:41, breaking Kim Lehman's 1982 mark of 17:47.
Her second "Runner of the Week" award came after the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 21 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois.
Jones led from start to finish en route to posting a winning time of 21:40.8 over the flat, and fast, 6,000 meter layout at Saukie. She won by 37 seconds over runner-up Karen Grauel (22on 17.9) of Truman State.
Jones came into her senior year after a tremendous junior season. She was the team MVP in three sports (cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field) during the 2011-12 school year. She won College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin titles in both the indoor (3000 & distance medley) and outdoor (5000) conference meets and was fifth in the conference cross country meet in 2011.
Jones is the daughter of Elizabeth and Lewis Jones of Glen Allen Virginia and she is a communications and English major. Last year she won the Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW after each of her three seasons (cross country, indoor & outdoor track). The Swartz Award is given to one male and one female student-athlete at each conference school who combines athletic prowess and academic success.
