Shipon goal gives Augustana win in OT

Junior Matt Shipon scored in overtime Sunday to give Augustana a 2-1 win over Concordia-Moorhead at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Junior Matt Shipon (South Elgin HS, Elgin, Ill.) scored in the ninth minute of overtime Sunday to give Augustana a 2-1 win over Concordia-Moorhead at Thorson-Lucken Field. The win bumps the Vikings' record to 5-5-2 on the year, while the Cobbers fall to 5-7.

The game-winning sequence started with senior Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) lofting a cross from the left side. Freshman Gabriel Brouillette (Carmel HS, Mundelein, Ill.) got a head on the ball near an open far side of the net, but his shot hit the crossbar. However, Shipon was there to finish off the match with his first goal of the season.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute on Beckus' second goal of the season. Concordia tied it in the 52nd minute, when Michael Forston scored off a Jannick Bettels assist.

Augustana held a 25-13 advantage in shots, although the shots on goal were much more even with the hosts having an 11-10 edge. The Vikings had a huge 13-2 margin in corners.

Sophomore Brett Johnson (Zion Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) went the distance in goal for Augustana, recording nine saves to improve to 3-2-1 on the season. Cobber keeper Peter Runquist recorded eight saves in the match.

The Vikings jump back into CCIW play on Wednesday, October 10, hosting Carthage at 7:30 p.m. That match will be the back end of a women's/men's doubleheader at Thorson-Lucken Field.
