Smith named "Runner of the Week" in the CCIW

Senior Jonathan Smith was named "Runner of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin after finishing fourth in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 21 at Saukie Golf Course. He led the 13th ranked Vikings to the team title in the 34-team meet.

Senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) has been the leader of Augustana's 13th ranked men's cross country team through the early going of the 2012 season. Today he was named the "Runner of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin after an outstanding effort in the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 21 at Saukie Golf Course.

Smith led the Vikings to the team title in the 34-team event by finishing fourth individually (second in the team standings) with a time of 25:17.2. He was just 11 seconds behind the individual winner Dan Sullivan of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Sullivan recorded a time of 25:06.9 over the 8000 meter course.

Augustana won the team title with 27 points as five Vikings placed in the top 11 in the team standings. Wisconsin-Stevens Point placed second with 38 points and the Pointers were ranked 24th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll.

Smith has been the top Augustana finisher in all three meets so far this year. He was 14th at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on Friday, September 14 at D.A. Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Illinois with a time of 24:51. In the first meet of the year, at the Western Illinois Invitational on August 31 in Macomb, Illinois, he was fourth with a time of 18:55.

He is the son of Brian and Lisa Smith of Moline, Illinois and is a biology major.
