16th-ranked Warhawks shut out Vikings

Junior goalkeeper Tyler Cowherd had five saves Wednesday night, but Augustana fell to 16th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater by a score of 3-1 at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Wisconsin-Whitewater's Sam Novak scored his first two goals of the season Wednesday as the 16th-ranked Warhawks defeated Augustana 3-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field. UWW improves to 4-1-1 on the year while the Vikings fall to 3-3-1.

Novak got the scoring started in the 12th minute, taking a feed from Michael Montanye on the right side and burying in the back of the net for a 1-0 Warhawk lead. That would be the only score of the opening half, although in the 15th minute, Whitwater's Austin Saari missed a golden opportunity when his shot at an open net bounced off the right post.

The Vikings stayed within a goal until the 64th minute when they were called for a foul just outside the box. Warhawk Logan Fye made them pay, slipping his free kick just inside the right post for a 2-0 UWW lead. In the 88th minute, Novak made it 3-0, scoring after Augustana was called for another foul just outside the box. This time, Alex Szarzynski's free kick from a severe angle on the right side found Novak in front of the goal and he put it in to account for the final.

Whitewater outshot the Vikings by a 17-11 margin, including 8-5 in shots on goal. Both Augustana goalkeeper Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and his Warhawk counterpart, Matt Mikesell, recorded five saves in the match. The Vikings held a 6-5 edge in corners.

Augustana plays its first of three straight road matches on Sunday, September 23, facing Simpson in Indianola, Iowa at 3:00 p.m.
