Whitewater hands Vikings first loss

Kerri Skotnicki, Kirsten Boesen and Morgan Olsen (L-R) and their Augustana teammates dropped a 3-1 decision to UW-Whitewater Wednesday night at Thorson-Lucken Field. The loss was the first of the season for the 15th-ranked Vikings.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Wisconsin-Whitewater's Christina Tooren had two goals and an assist Wednesday night to lead the Warhawks to a 3-1 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The loss was the first of the season for the 15th-ranked Vikings, who fall to 5-1-0. UW-Whitewater improves to 4-3-0.

The hosts took an early lead when senior Morgan Olsen (Downers Grove North HS, Woodridge, Ill.) slid a corner kick just inside the near post in the sixth minute. The goal was Olsen's third of the season.

Tooren answered in the 32nd minute, scoring off a Jessica Allemang corner kick to level the score at 1-1. That's the way the first half would end.

It was all Warhawks in the second 45 minutes, as Augustana was unable to take advantage of a strong southerly wind at its back. Tooren gave UW-Whitewater the lead with her fourth goal of the season, in the 69th minute and then assisted on a Jenna Woodson goal in the 75th minute to give the Warhawks a 3-1 lead. The Vikings were never able to mount a serious challenge after falling behind, getting off just three shots in the final 22 minutes of the match.

The visitors had a 12-10 advantage in shots, including 10-4 in shots on goal. Corners were even at three. Warhawk keeper Jordan Myers recorded three saves, while Augustana's Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoeniz, Ariz.) recorded seven.

Augustana is back in action on Sunday, September 23, hosting Milwaukee School of Engineering at 2:00 p.m. at Thosron-Lucken Field.
