Vikings move to 5-0 in CCIW

Freshman Aileen MacDonald moved her singles record to 7-2 and is now 5-2 in doubles with partner Kim Sawyer after Augustana defeated Elmhurst 9-0 on Saturday, September 15. The Vikings are 6-2 overall and 5-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana tossed a 9-0 shutout at Elmhurst on Saturday, September 15  to move to 6-1 overall and, more importantly, 5-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. In a match later in the afternoon, second year head coach Jon Miedema's team fell to Upper Iowa 9-0. With the loss to the Peacocks, the Vikings fall to 6-2 overall.

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles in the Elmhurst match and then won each of the six singles matches in straight sets in the match that was played at the Lower Campus Courts.

Junior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) picked up a 6-1; 6-2 win over Annie Duggan at number one singles to move her overall record this year to 7-0. She also teamed with freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) to beat Nicole Darga and Brittany Kuehn at number one doubles by a score of 8-0. Sawyer and MacDonald are now 5-2 for the season. MacDonald defeated Ragan Wilson at number four singles 6-1; 6-1 to up her mark to 7-2.

Junior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) beat Darga at number two singles by a score of 6-2; 6-2 to even her record at 5-5. Senior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) beat Lauren Kuehn 6-4; 6-0 at number three singles and is now 6-4. She teamed with fellow senior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) at number three doubles to beat Wilson and Jennifer Guenther 8-6. Panko and Wethington are a perfect 7-0 this year.

Junior Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) defeated Brittany Kuehn 6-1; 6-1 at number five singles to move to 6-1 while junior Katie Scharnagle (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Lisle, Ill.) is now 4-3 at winning 6-1; 6-1 over McKennah Lloyd at number six.

The number two doubles team of sophomores Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) beat Duggan and Lauren Kuehn 8-4 and are now 6-4.

Augustana could not manage a victory against NCAA Division II Upper Iowa. In doubles, the number three team of Meghan Wethington and Krista Panko fell 9-7 to Paige Olson and Nicole Pothen while in singles Scharnagle dropped a tough three set match to Pothen 6-2; 5-7; 10-6.
