Loras Preview
![]() |
| Sophomore placekicker Brady Rogers and the Augustana football team will be looking for their first win of the season Saturday when they host Loras at Ericson Field at 6:00 p.m. The game will be part of Family Weekend festivities. |
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - After three quarters which yielded just a single field goal in the way of scoring this past Saturday, Augustana and Central put 24 points on the board in the final period. Unfortunately, the Vikings came up on the short end of a 17-10 decision in Pella, Iowa. The loss drops Augustana to 0-2 on the year heading into this year's home opener against Loras on Saturday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m. The Duhawks will be the Vikings third straight opponent out of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In Pella on Saturday, the hosts kicked a field goal on their first possession of the game and that was all the scoring until the first play of the fourth quarter. After the Dutch recovered their own fumble at the Augustana five-yard line on the final play of the third period, quarterback Aaron Eiseler took a keeper into the end zone on the next play. The point after gave Central a 10-0 advantage. The Vikings cut it to 10-3 with a field goal before the Dutch scored again, this time on a 49-yard touchdown pass from Jack Flaherty to Blaine Forsythe.
Trailing 17-3, Augustana still had some life left. With just over five minutes remaining and facing fourth-and-10 from his own 42-yard line, senior quarterback Nick Welch (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) escaped a sack and found junior running back Eric Chandler (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) alone down the left sideline. Chandler went in for the score and Brady Rogers' (Cherokee Trail HS, Parker, Colo.) point after cut the lead to 17-10. The Viking defense then forced a Central three-and-out, but the Dutch intercepted a Welch pass on Augustana's final possession to secure the win.
After being in on 18 tackles at Dubuque in the Vikings' opener, junior linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) added 14 more stops at Central. His 3½ tackles-for-loss also lead the team through two games. Junior linebacker Mike O'Donoghue (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) is tied with senior Rob Mago (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) for second on the team with 17 tackles and has made 2½ tackles-for-loss and two sacks, which is tied for the team lead with senior linebacker Joe Weber (Marmion Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore defensive end Sean McIntyre (Genoa-Kingston HS, Genoa, Ill.).
Chandler has been the team's leading rusher and receiver in the early going, having carried 12 times for 69 yards (5.8 yards per carry) and a touchdown and snared three passes for 81 yards (27.0 per reception) and one score. Junior Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) has three catches for 50 yards.
At quarterback, Welch is nine of 23 passing for 185 yards with one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. He's also the Vikings' second-leading rusher with 53 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
Augustana is averaging 112.5 yards per game on the ground and 103.5 through the air on offense. Its defense has allowed an average of 187.0 rushing yards per game (3.8 per carry) and 213.0 via the pass.
Loras comes to Ericson Field this Saturday with a 1-1 record. After dropping their season opener to Elmhurst 36-0, the Duhawks rebounded with a 28-14 win over Rockford this past Saturday. Both of the contests were home dates in Dubuque, Iowa.
Freshman running back Nate Carrier has paced a ground-oriented Loras attack with 211 rushing yards. 207 of those came in the win over Rockford and Carrier is averaging 7.8 yards per carry early on. Sophomore quarterback Dylan Jones has completed 13 of 33 passes for 128 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Junior fullback Kyle Bergquist has been his favorite target with five catches for 30 yards and a touchdown. Senior center Sam Ross was an honorable mention All-IIAC selection in 2011. Second-year Duhawk head coach Paul Mierkiewicz also welcomes back second team all-league kicker Tyler Wilker. Loras averages 203.5 rushing yards per game (4.7 per carry) and 64.0 through the air.
Defensively, the Duhawks have given up an average of 346.0 total yards per game--180.5 rushing (4.5 per carry) and 165.5 passing. Senior linebacker Brandon Ronan leads Loras with 15 tackles, while junior corner Dave Pirkle and senior linebacker Dan Badovinac have each been in on 10. Freshman end Carson Smith has a team-best three tackles-for-loss.
