Vikings sixth in Midwest Region

Senior captain Brian Pollastrini and the Augustana Vikings are ranked sixth in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Midwest Regional poll. Augustana fell one spot since the preseason poll.

NEW ORLEANS, La.— Following an impressive first couple weeks of training and competition, coach Paul Olsen's Augustana men's cross country team has been ranked sixth in the Midwest Region in the first U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Division III poll of the season. The Vikings are one of three College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin teams ranked in the top ten.

The Vikings are coming off of a weekend of no competition, but two weekends ago they had an exciting performance at the Western Illinois Invite. Augustana finished second with 40 points behind only the 18 points tallied by University of Iowa, a Division I school. The Vikings were led by senior captains Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), who finished fourth and sixth respectively. Augustana put its depth on display by placing 14 runners in the top 25.

Defending national champion North Central of the CCIW is ranked first in the Midwest Region. Washington University is ranked second in the region followed by another CCIW squad, Wheaton, which is third in the Midwest. Chicago leapfrogged from eighth in the region to fourth. Wisconsin-LaCrosse is ranked fifth, just ahead of the Vikings who are ranked sixth. Rounding out the top ten of the Midwest Region are four Wisconsin state schools (Stevens Point, Eau Claire, Platteville, and Oshkosh).
