Panko picks up 100th victory as Vikings win twice

Senior Krista Panko won four matches on Monday, September 3 as Augustana beat Loras (9-0) and North Central (7-2). With those victories, Panko picked up her 100th career win for the Vikings.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - It was a tremendous day for the Augustana women's tennis team as the Vikings won a pair of matches and senior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) collected her 100th career victory. Augustana beat Loras 9-0 in the morning on Monday, September 3 and then came back in the afternoon to take care of North Central 7-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener for both teams.

Panko achieved her 100th career victory (singles and doubles combined) when she beat Madeline Urban of North Central at number three singles in the afternoon match. She went 4-0 on the day and now has a career record of 100-78.

Augustana is now 2-1 on the season and will play Millikin on Friday, September 7 in Decatur, Illinois at 4:00 p.m. and then the Vikings take on Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, September 8 in Bloomington, Illinois at 9:00 a.m.

AUGUSTANA 7, NORTH CENTRAL 2

Senior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) won both her singles and doubles match as Augustana defeated North Central 7-2 on Monday, September 3 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action at the Lower Campus Courts. Panko's victories were significant because they moved her to the 100 victory plateau for her career.

She teamed with senior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) at number three doubles to defeat the Cardinal team of Kassandra Bernardo and Rebecca Ross by a score of 8-4. That set up a singles match at number three where Panko beat Madeline Urban 6-3; 6-2 and notched her 100th career victory. Panko now has 100 victories against 78 defeats during her illustrious career.

The Vikings jumped ahead 2-1 after doubles competition as junior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) beat Katie Hatch and Joan McMahon 8-3 at number one.

Sawyer defeated Jenny Velasquez 6-2; 6-0 at number one singles and junior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) beat Katie Hatch 6-1; 6-2 at number two. MacDonald beat Reynolds Cross 6-0; 6-4 at number four and junior Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) took care of Kassandra Bernardo 6-4; 6-1 at number five.

AUGUSTANA 9, LORAS 0

The Vikings picked up their first win of the 2012 season in convincing fashion by blanking Loras 9-0 on Monday, September 3 at the Lower Campus Courts. Augustana, which lost its first match to regionally ranked Grinnell 7-2 on Thursday, August 30, cruised to victory against the Duhawks.

Senior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) picked up a pair of victories and moved her career total to 98 (98-78) with a win at singles and another in doubles. She beat Est Mungai at number three singles by a score of 6-3; 6-2 and then teamed with fellow senior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) at number three doubles. Panko and Wethington beat Carly Villano and Rebecca Weglarz 8-0.

Augustana jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles. Senior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) beat Elizabeth Dickhut and Caroline Rainey 8-2 at number one. Sophomores Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) beat Mungai and Rachel Weglarz 8-2 at number two.

Sawyer moved her record to 2-0 in singles with a 6-0; 7-6 victory over Dickhut at number one singles. Junior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) defeated Villano 6-1; 6-1 at number two. Junior Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) picked up a 6-3; 6-2 win over Rachel Weglarz at number four. Junior Katie Scharnagle (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Lisle, Ill.)  won 6-0; 6-1 over Caroline Rainey at number five and Pence picked up a 6-2; 6-3 triumph over Rebecca Weglarz at number six.
