| Senior linebacker Joe Weber and the Viking defense will try to slow down the high-powered Dubuque Spartans Saturday as Augustana opens its 2012 season on the road. |
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Season two of the Rob Cushman era at Augustana gets underway Saturday, September 1 when the Vikings take on the Dubuque Spartans in a 6:00 p.m. contest at Chalmers Field in Dubuque, Iowa. Augustana finished 2-8 in Cushman's first year, although three of those losses came in games decided in the final minute, including back-to-back setbacks on last-second field goals.
Cushman's staff has undergone an overhaul, with five new assistants on board this year, including defensive coordinator Tom Casey. Casey previously held the same position at Division I Western Illinois.
The Vikings return 43 letter winners and 12 starters from a year ago, led by first team All-CCIW linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.). The 6-3, 210-pound junior led the conference in both solo and total tackles last year and finished eighth in the nation with 72 solo stops. In addition, Westerberg was a second team CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American and was named to Beyond Sports Network's 2012 pre-season All-America third team. His running mate at inside linebacker, senior Joe Weber (Marmion Academy, South Elgin, Ill.), was a second team All-CCIW pick in 2011 after leading the team with five sacks and three fumble recoveries.
Five other defensive starters return as well, although senior linemen Pete Schimeck (Benet Academy, Naperville, Ill.) and Luke Anderson (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) are currently out with injuries. Senior linebacker-defensive back Rob Mago (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), senior end Shane Holl (Batavia HS, North Aurora, Ill.) and sophomore safety Bo Goshorn (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) are the other returning defensive starters.
On offense, the top priority will be finding a replacement for record-setting quarterback David Lee. Senior Nick Welch (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) has the inside track heading into the opener, with freshman Sam Frasco (Prospect HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) leading a talented crop of newcomers at the position. Welch's chief weapons figure to be junior Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), who was the team's third-leading receiver a year ago with 24 catches for 299 yards and three touchdowns, and senior Brett McWilliams (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) and junior Eric Chandler (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), the Vikings' top two running backs in 2011. Seniors Mike Kautz (Alleman HS, East Moline, Ill.) and Derek King (Westmer HS, New Boston, Ill.) and sophomore Anthony Roome (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) are returning starters on the offensive line.
The kicking game figures to be in good shape, with senior Arnie Fitzwater (Union HS, Waterford, Wis.) handling the punting chores and sophomore Brady Rogers (Cherokee Trail HS, Parker, Colo.) doing the placekicking. Fitzwater led the CCIW and ranked 12th in the nation in punting last year. He joined Westerberg on both the All-CCIW first team and BSN's pre-season All-America third team.
Saturday's opponent, the Spartans of Dubuque, went 9-2 a year ago, winning the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and reaching the NCAA Division III playoffs. They defeated Augustana 18-13 in the 2011 season opener at Ericson Field. The Vikings were one of just two opponents to hold Dubuque to less than 39 points last year.
Spartan coach Stan Zweifel will have to find a replacement for son Michael, the leading pass-catcher in the history of college football. Michael Zweifel caught an astonishing 140 passes for 1,915 yards and 25 touchdowns last year--leading the nation in all three categories--and finished his career with 463 receptions. The cupboard isn't bare, however. Senior quarterback Wyatt Hanus is back after completing 73 percent of his passes for 3,490 yards and 44 touchdowns against just eight interceptions in 2011. He ranked second in the nation in passing efficiency and fifth in total offense. 6-5, 255-pound tight end Miles Hookstead (33 catches, 349 yards and six touchdowns) is Hanus' top returning target. Junior running back Kyle Acker (93 carries, 432 yards, three touchdowns) will step in for Justin Spaulding (1,340 yards and 13 TD's as a senior in 2011) at running back.
The Spartan defense allowed an average of 25.0 points and 361.3 total yards per game last year. Opponents averaged 170.3 yards per game on the ground and 4.3 yards per carry. Dubuque gave up 191.0 passing yards per game on 55 percent completions and forced 22 turnovers on the season.

Rob Cushman is in his second season as the head coach of the Augustana football program. He has spent the 2008-10 seasons serving as the Viking defensive coordinator. His coaching career began at Cal State-Chico in 1979. His first head coaching position was at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon, where he spent five seasons before being named the first head coach at Feather River College in Quincy, California in 2002. He led the fledgling program to a 34-21 (.618) record in five seasons, reaching a post-season bowl game each year.
