This Week's Message
Welcome to Week 2! We hope that you are getting back into the swing of things.
We wanted to remind you that there is still time to volunteer for the two working groups forming to discuss Advising and Faculty Development.
The Advising Working Group will be forming a plan to improve advising on campus. The group will identify best practices in undergraduate advising, examine our advising structure, and develop a response to the Advising Program Review that occurred in 2010-2011 (we need to close the assessment loop!). Our goal is to provide a framework for the transition from a culture of prescriptive advising to one where advising leads to deep student learning. The Advising Working group will be FUN!
The Faculty Development Working Group will examine how faculty development efforts should be organized at Augustana. We'll look at centers for faculty development at other colleges, and examine our own faculty's priorities, needs, and desires for guidance and mentoring in their work. Our goal is to provide a plan for serving the faculty at all stages of their careers, and make faculty development central to strategic planning efforts at the college. The Faculty Development Working Group will be EVEN MORE FUN! (Disclaimer: This was last edited by Margaret.)
If you're passionate about either advising or faculty development, we urge you to join the fun! Please express your interest to Sharon Varallo (Chair of Nominations and Rules) by August 31.
Sincerely,
Margaret Farrar and Kristin Douglas
P.S. Also, remember to attend this week's Friday Conversation for a continuation of our discussion at the Faculty Retreat on vision, values, and academic strategic planning.
