10 sidewalk graphics installed on campus
To help visitors get a sense of Augustana's history and traditions when a student tour guide (or tour leader extraordinaire Kai Swanson '86) isn't around, the college has installed 10 sidewalk graphics around campus.
"Augustana is known for its beautiful campus, and visitors usually make the time to walk around-and we welcome them," said Kent Barnds, vice president of enrollment, communication and marketing. "Prospective students and their families sometimes visit on their own, and we hope the sidewalk graphics help them get a better feel for the college and make their visit more memorable."
Each graphic is a snapshot of a time in the college's history related to where the person is standing. They are not numbered; there's no order to follow. The graphics have been installed near the following locations:
- Carver Center
- Ericson Field
- Emmy Evald Carlsson Hall
- Centennial Hall
- Denkmann Memorial Building
- Old Main
- Bell Tower
- Hanson Hall of Science
- Swenson Hall of Geosciences
- PepsiCo Recreation Center
Each laminated vinyl decal looks like it could be peeled off the sidewalk, but a special adhesive that sticks to sidewalk concrete prevents that from happening.
Jennifer Schroder '13, as part of her duties in the Office of Communication and Marketing this summer, led the sidewalk graphics project. She collaborated with Sarah Horowitz, Special Collections librarian, and Kai Swanson, executive assistant to the president, as she researched texts and collected images for the sidewalk graphics.
Alumni and other friends of the college who live outside the Quad Cities are encouraged to check out the new sidewalk graphics (and test their own knowledge of Augie history) when visiting campus Oct. 12-14 for "Building Spirit" Homecoming 2012.
