AUGUSTANA EMPLOYEE PICNIC AND NIGHT OF FUN

The campus community is invited to enjoy a free picnic dinner and a night of fun at Modern Woodmen Park! Doors will open at 6 p.m. for our picnic at the ballpark's Party Plaza. We'll have hot dogs and hamburgers, salads, beverages and dessert. (Vegetarian options will be available). Those who want other refreshments may purchase them at the concession stand nearby. The Quad City River Bandits will take on the Kane County Cougars beginning at 7 p.m. We'll have prizes, games and drawings before the game.
Located on the field level down the right field line, the Party Plaza is right next to the Kids Zone! Picnics begin one hour prior to game time and continue one hour into the ballgame.
RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS - ACADEMIC YEAR 2012-2013
For your information, dates of major Christian, Jewish and Muslim holidays which will occur while Augustana is in session for 2012-2013 are as follows so that you may know of potential schedule conflicts involving large numbers of students. All students are responsible for negotiating their needs around religious practices with the professor.
Jewish holidays begin at sunset on the evening before the date given. Muslim holidays begin at sunset on the evening before the date given. Muslim holidays are based on a lunar calendar, and the actual dates are determined by direct observation of the moon and announced by the mosque.

SYMPOSIA DAYS TO REPLACE CONVOCATIONS THIS YEAR
Fall Term Symposium Day is Thursday, September 27, 2012
The topic of the September symposium is civic engagement, and Paul Loeb, author of Soul of a Citizen, will present a keynote address.
There is now a Moodle site for the Symposium day. It is located under Departments and other groups on the main Course Categories page. Chapter 1 of Loeb's book, Soul of a Citizen, is posted on this site if you would like to use it as a reading in your course(s).
FACULTY RESEARCH FORUM
The Faculty Research Forum (FRF) is a friendly, interdisciplinary working group of researchers and writers that gathers once a term (this year) to workshop works-in-progress (e.g., book chapters, grant proposals, conference papers, journal articles, book proposals, and other forms of scholarly production). Volunteers submit their work to the group, and then we gather over drinks and snacks to ask questions and provide constructive critiques--all in an effort to improve our research and writing. That said, you do not have to present a work in progress to participate in the FRF!
In years past, the group has consisted of assistant to full professors in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. (People with sabbaticals or pre-tenure paid leaves often find the group especially valuable.) We ask only that members make a commitment to read the material sent to them a week before the FRF meeting, come to the meeting and give constructive feedback on the works-in-progress, and also to enjoy the ability to socialize with your fellow faculty members over beer, wine, soda and cheese.
The dates for this year's 4:30 p.m. FRF workshops are 27 September, 23 January and 9 April. (We will meet in the Dahl Room on 27 September and 9 April. The 23 January meeting will be in the Wilson Center.)
If you are interested in being part of this group, whether or not you have something to present--or simply wish to learn more--please email Bob Tallitsch before Monday, August 27th and indicate the following: name and discipline, and you will be added to the mailing list.
If you are interested in presenting a work to the group please provide (a) name, (b) discipline, and (c) a brief description of a project that you are working on this year, and (d) the FRF date that the project would be ready for review (not necessarily completed).
WOMEN & GENDER STUDIES CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
Each year, the Women and Gender Studies program hosts the Feminist Tea Series, a series of lectures on topics related to women, gender, sexuality, and/or masculinity given by faculty members to the Augustana community at large. These lectures take place twice each term (Weeks 3 and 7) on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 in Evald's Great Hall. The setting is friendly and informal, and food and tea are provided. We would like to invite those of you with relevant research to submit a proposal; especially welcome are presentations by new faculty members!
If you are interested in participating, please send your name, your title and a brief description of your presentation to Kirsten Day or Margaret Morse, along with an indication of which of the following dates would work best for you (with an alternate if possible):

Special Issue, Winter 2012: "Assessment/Engagement/Impact: Results from Two Multi-Institution Collaborative Studies"
In 2005, the late Dr. Michael Nolan of Augustana College served as principal investigator for a grant from the Teagle Foundation to test the claim that the participating colleges and small universities made a demonstrable and statistically significant impact on the intellectual and ethical development of their students. The grant, "Measuring Intellectual Development and Civic Engagement through Value-Added Assessment," brought together over four years faculty, administrators, and academic staff from six member campuses to assess and discuss key findings. In 2009, Provost Ken Bladh of Wittenberg University was awarded a second grant from the Teagle Foundation to continue some of the research begun in the first Teagle grant. This second project, "Structuring Faculty Work Explicitly Around Student Learning" (2009), focused the discussion on 'high-impact teaching practices' and how institutions can sustain and encourage their use given competing demands for faculty time and sometimes inconsistent reward structures for faculty work.
The Winter 2012 issue of Chalk will be dedicated to the memory of Michael Nolan and will provide a forum for program participants from the institutions involved to share with a wider audience what they have learned on their own campuses from one another in the process of completing this grant-funded research. 15TH ANNUAL FRIEZE LECTURE SERIES
The Rock Island Public Library and Augustana College are partnering to offer a four-week lecture series on the bicentennial of the birth of Charles Dickens.
The 15th annual fall Frieze Lecture Series brings Augustana College professors into the Rock Island Main Library for thought-provoking college lectures with no grades or tests. This year's theme is "What the Dickens?" with each lecture featuring a topic related to one of the best-known writers in the English language.
The lecture series is offered in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street, at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, October 23, 30, November 6 and 13. Coffee and conversation follow the lectures. Dates, presenters and topics include:
Tuesday, October 23: Dr. Karin Youngberg, Augustana College English department, will provide an overview of the life and work of Charles Dickens. Dr. Youngberg, who holds Augustana's Conrad Bergendoff Chair in the Humanities, will set the table for the Series' consideration of Dickens' place in literature and history.
Tuesday, October 30: Dr. David Ellis, Augustana College history department, will speak on the world Dickens inhabited, considering the key themes and issues in British, European and global history at the time Dickens was active.
Tuesday, November 6: Dr. Cathy Goebel, Augustana College art history department, will offer a slide lecture on artists important to Dickens. Dr. Goebel, who holds Augustana's Paul A. Anderson Chair in the Arts, will discuss both those artists who were favorites of Dickens and those who found inspiration in his literary works.
Tuesday, November 13: Dr. Umme Al-Wazedi, Augustana College English department, will provide a post-colonial view of the staunchly pro-colonial Dickens, and consider how his place in literature has changed in a world vastly different from the one in which he lived.

FACULTY RETIREE PROCEDURES
For faculty retiring in May, the college requests that notification is made to Academic Affairs in the previous calendar year within the months of August or September. September 20 will serve as the deadline for payroll data entry in order to place upcoming retirees on nine-month pay schedules. This will allow benefits and salary to cease as of May 31, as well as allowing upcoming retirees ample time to coordinate enrollment and transition to Medicare and/or Social Security benefits.
