Viking trio named pre-season All-Region

Senior Joe Weber was one of three Vikings named to the pre-season Midwest All-Region team by USA Football News. Weber led Augustana in sacks and was tied for the team lead in tackles for loss last season.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - A trio of Augustana football players have been named to the 2012 pre-season Midwestern All-Region team by USA Football News.  Seniors Arnie Fitzwater (Union HS, Waterford, Wis.), and Joe Weber (Marmion Academy, Chicago, Ill.), and junior Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), were selected as members of the all-region defensive team.

Fitzwater, a second team all-region selection by D3Football.com last season, led the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in punting in 2011 with averages of 41.0 yards gross and 36.9 net in league play. He was named first team all-conference for his efforts. He also finished among the national leaders in punting last year sporting overall averages of 40.5 gross yards and 36.0 net. These numbers ranked him 12th and sixth in the nation, respectively, at the Division III level. Fitzwater put his name in the Augustana record books when he tied a 44-year old school record with a 76-yard boot against Elmhurst. Additionally, he was named Augustana's Special Teams Most Valuable Player for 2011. Arnie is the son of Don and Julie Fitzwater.

Weber, a CCIW second team all-conference selection in 2011, led the Vikings in sacks last season with five. He also tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with five. He was second on the team in total tackles, tallying 48 for the year. Weber forced one fumbled and recovered three others as well. He also blocked one kick on special teams. Joe is the son of Josef and Kerry Weber.

Westerberg was also a second team all-region selection by D3Football.com last season. He finished eighth in the nation with 72 solo tackles and tied for 34th with 106 total tackles. He led the CCIW in both categories with 51 and 72, respectively, in league games and was named a CCIW first team all-conference player. He was named the Vikings' Most Valuable Player as well as the team's Defensive MVP. In addition to his prowess on the field, Westerberg was a first team Academic All-District selection by CoSIDA/Capital One in 2011.  Furthermore, he was a second team CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American as well. Erik is the son of Peter and Annette Westerberg.
