Augie Choice funding surpasses $1.5 million
July 31, 2012
Augie Choice — which guarantees each student $2,000 for a hands-on learning experience of his or her choice — has surpassed $1.5 million in its third year.
Students are eligible for Augie Choice beginning their junior year. They use their $2,000 to offset the expenses of international study, research or an internship.
“Experiential learning is one of the most powerful ways of learning and Augie Choice provides the opportunity to all Augustana students to participate in this type of learning,” said Dr. Pareena Lawrence, dean and chief academic officer.
Dr. Ellen Hay, professor of communication studies and interim director of Augustana’s Community Engagement Center, added, “We want our graduates to possess the confidence of their beliefs, to interact effectively with others, and to contribute to their chosen fields. While we begin realizing these goals through the courses that students take across the liberal arts, these aspirations cannot truly be achieved until students step outside the classroom to analyze and apply their learning. Augie Choice provides the support for them to do so.”
In Dr. Hay’s words, “We teach students to walk. With Augie Choice, they learn to run."
During this academic year nearly 250 students took advantage of Augie Choice grants; many are using the summer months for their experience.
Among the recent Augie Choices:
