The International Programs Office was established in 2006, and is staffed by Dr. Allen Bertsche, Director and Ms. Jane Tiedge, Associate Director.
Allen Bertsche received his B.A. in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Indiana University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has taught at Augustana since 1996, where as a member of the Spanish Department he worked to create two new international programs in Spain, coordinate the longstanding Summer Spanish Program in the Andes and directed four Fall Term in Latin America programs. He has been a member of the International Study Committee since 1997 and served as Spanish Department Chair from 2005 until 2011. In June of 2010 he begins his work as Director of International Programs at Augustana. His responsibilities include working with faculty to create, expand and develop Augustana International and Off-Campus programs as well as to assist students who seek to study, intern or volunteer overseas. His office supports the college's mission towards a globalized curriculum and a rich offering of international experiences. Dr. Bertsche has lived, studied, worked or traveled in Spain, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Japan and Canada. He is married, with two adorable golden retrievers.
Laura Mahn is the Coordinator of Volunteer and Off-Campus Programming. Laura received her B.A. in Speech Communications from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and her Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology, Emory University. Laura shares her time between the Center for Vocational Reflection and the International & Off-Campus Programs office. Laura is responsible for providing opportunities for students to explore their vocation by connecting them with the larger community in the Quad Cities and beyond through volunteer opportunities. She also assists in coordinating domestic off-campus programming. Laura hails from the Southeast region of the United States and has lived and traveled internationally in Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Belize, Peru, Scotland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Germany and Bosnia.
