2012 Season - Barker's two homers not enough

Senior left fielder Mike Barker went 3-for-4 with two home runs Friday, but Augustana dropped a 7-6 decision to Elmhurst in the CCIW tournament.

CHICAGO, Ill.-Mike Barker (Centennial, Colo. Grandview HS, Marina del Rey, Cal.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs Friday, but it wasn't enough to keep Augustana from falling to Elmhurst 7-6 in the CCIW tournament. The loss eliminated the Vikings and they finish the season with a record of 25-17.

Augustana led early, but the Bluejays put together a three-run eighth to take a 7-4 lead. The Vikings responded with two runs in the ninth, but ended the game with the bases loaded for the second straight day.

A sacrifice fly by Barker gave the Vikings the lead in the first, following a Jacob VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) walk and a Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) single. Juhl scored on an Elmhurst error later in the inning and Augustana led 2-0 after one.

The Bluejays evened things up with a pair of runs, one of which was unearned, off Viking starter Seth Davis (JK Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) in the top of the third. Barker's leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame put Augustana up 3-2. Again in the fifth, Elmhurst scored to tie the game only to have Barker regain the Viking lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning.

Augustana bullpen ace Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) came on to start the seventh and the first batter he faced, Brian Evans, homered to right to tied it at 4-4. The Bluejays got to Martin for three more runs, two of which were unearned, in the eighth to take a 7-4 lead.

Elmhurst's Zach Hofer took over for starter Joe Luft to start the bottom of the ninth. Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) delivered a one-out single to center, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on an infield hit by VanDuyne. Juhl followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Serna to cut the deficit to 7-5. Barker reached on an infield hit and Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) made it a one-run game with a single to center, scoring VanDuyne. Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) drew a walk to load the bases, but freshman Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) grounded out to first to end the game.

Barker ended up 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in. Stewart had two hits and VanDuyne scored twice. Davis went six innings and fanned seven. He allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) while walking four. Martin suffered just his second loss of the season against four wins.
