WVIK, the Quad Cities public radio station, recently won eight awards from the Iowa Broadcast News Association convention and the Illinois News Broadcasters Association convention.
In the Downstate Radio division of the Illinois Associated Press Broadcasters Association 2011 Journalism Excellence Contest, News Editor Michelle O’Neill won the second place Best Use of Sound award. Entries in the Best Use of Sound category are judged on use of natural and creative sound to tell or enhance the news story. O’Neill’s piece, “School Budgets and Musical Instruments,” focused on one high school in the Quad Cities and the major cuts in the music program.
O’Neill’s piece also won two awards at the Iowa Broadcast News Association convention, Best Use of Actuality, and second place for In-depth/Series.
News Director Herb Trix also won awards from the Iowa Broadcast News Association. For the weekly program Midwest Week, Trix won first place in the Public Affairs category, and he also won second place in Public Affairs for his story, “Health Care Law Anniversary.” His piece “Falcon Banding” won third place in the Feature category, and Trix was honored with second place in the Best Newscast category.
Trix and Dave Garner, host of Morning Classics on WVIK, also won first place in the General Reporting category for another feature story, “First Army Welcome.”
