MOLINE, Ill.-Millikin's Logan Bolton scattered 12 Augustana hits in a 140-pitch, complete game performance Sunday as the Vikings lost their regular season finale 8-1 to the Big Blue at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Augustana finishes with an 11-10 record in the CCIW and heads into next weekend's conference tournament with an overall record of 25-15. Millikin improves to 12-26 overall and ends up 7-14 in league play.
The Big Blue, which got its leadoff hitter on in each of the first five innings and six of the first seven, struck for three runs in the top of the first. David Peters and Kollin Haws started the game with back-to-back singles off Viking starter Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa). Theo Facer sacrificed them to second and third and McIntosh walked Dan Weber to load the bases. A Peter Bonner single to center brought Peters home with the game's first run and Millikin added to its lead with an RBI fielder's choice by Andrew Hendrian and a run-scoring single to left by Brian Ekiss.
Mike Barker (Centennial, Colo. Grandview HS, Marina del Rey, Cal.) got a two-out double in the bottom of the first, but was left stranded at third.
In the top of the second, a walk, infield hit, error and sacrifice fly allowed the Big Blue to extend its lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the inning, Joe Cecchi (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) line a two-out double down the left field line and Jim Sandberg (JK Mullen HS, Littleton, Colo.) was hit by a pitch, but both were left stranded.
The Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the third. Jacob VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) led off the frame with an infield hit and stole second before eventually scoring on a Barker sacrifice fly.
The Augustana pitching settled down, with McIntosh throwing a scoreless third and fourth before giving way to Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.), who left a pair of Big Blue stranded in the fifth and set Millikin down in order in the sixth.
However, the Vikings missed a pair of golden opportunities to tighten things up. They left the bases full in the bottom of the fifth before a pivotal sixth inning. After Martin had retired the visitors in order for the first time in the game in the top half, Sandberg reached on a one-out error in the bottom. Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) followed with a single to left. Anthony Concialdi (Fremd HS, Barrington, Ill.) pinch-ran at second for Sandberg with VanDuyne coming to the plate. VanDuyne grounded a single through the middle, but Jared Dosien's throw from center cut down Concialdi at the plate and catcher Haws threw to third to retire Serna and end the inning.
The Big Blue put the game away with a four-run seventh.
McIntosh fell to 2-5 with the loss, while Bolton got the victory to improve to 3-8. VanDuyne, Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) and Barker each had three of the Vikings' 12 hits.
Sunday was also Senior Day at Swanson/Brunner, with Augustana honoring five players for their contributions to the program over the last four years. In addition to fellow seniors Martin, Serna, Barker and Concialdi, pitcher Mike Trotta (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) was honored.
The Vikings now prepare for the CCIW tournament, which will be held next weekend at the Holmgren Sports Complex on the campus of North Park University in Chicago, Illinois.
