2012 Season - Vikings win eight events at CCIW Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Augustana captured eight events in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 in Bloomington, Illinois. The Vikings, ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III rankings, scored 216.50 points in the two-day event. North Central, the number five team in the last poll, and the national champion indoors, won the meet with 285 points.
Carthage was a distant third with 106.5 while Wheaton took fourth with 66. Millikin (41), Illinois Wesleyan (40), North Park (35) and Elmhurst (27) rounded out the field.
Veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team won both relays, four running events, one field event and the decathlon en route to piling up more points than the combined total (209) of the teams finishing fourth through eighth.
Freshman Torre Harrell (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) picked up the first victory of the meet for Augustana when he won the long jump on Friday with a leap of 23' 0 ½".
Junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) continued to build on his CCIW titles as he won the 200 in :21.75 and anchored both relays to victory. He teamed with freshman David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.), junior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) to capture the 400 relay in :41.55. He was joined on the winning 1600 relay by senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.), junior Dan Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) and freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.). That quartet set a new CCIW record in posting a winning time of 3:13.44.
For good measure, Rindone was second in the 100 in :10.95. He now owns a total of 14 CCIW titles, either individual or relay. As a freshman in 2010 he won the 200 indoors and the 100, 200 and 400 relay in the outdoor meet. Last year he captured the 55 and 1600 relay indoors and the 100, 200, 400 relay and 1600 relay outdoors. This past year he won the 200 indoors and then added the three titles (200, 400 relay and 1600 relay) this past weekend.
Davis also added to his conference championship total for his career. In addition to running the leg on the 1600 relay, he won the 110 high hurdles in :15.00 and was fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles in :54.70. He will graduate with a total of seven CCIW titles. He was a member of the winning 1600 relay as a freshman in 2009 and won both the 110 highs and 400 intermediates in 2010 as a sophomore. He took the 55 hurdles indoors in 2011 and the 60 hurdles indoors this past winter.
Voland won the 400 intermediates with a time of :52.21 and took fourth in the 110 highs in :15.42 in addition to running on the 1600 relay.
Junior Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) won the 5000 in 15:15.16. Junior Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) took the decathlon with a final total of 5,912 points. During the grueling two-day event, he won three of the 10 events that make up the decathlon. He was tops in the 100 (:11.30), 400 (:51.65) and pole vault (13' 5").
Senior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 185' 6". Senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) took second in the discus with a throw of 156' 0". Cline was second in the 200 in :21.81 and third in the 100 in :11.11.
Patton ended up third in the 400 in :48.36 and seventh in the 200 in :23.26. Freshman Josh Prosser (Eureka HS, Goodfield, Ill.) cleared 6' 8" to place third in the high jump. Sophomore Josh Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) finished third in the decathlon with 5,613 points. Senior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) ran 31:14.9 and placed third in the 10,000 while senior teammate Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) was fourth at 31:15.6. Bowman also was eighth in the 5000 in 15:27.93.
Junior Luke Anderson (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) finished fourth in the javelin with a toss of 170' 7" and junior Jacob O'Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 20' 10". Senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was fourth in the hammer with a throw of 176' 4" and fifth in the shot at 46' 8 ¾". Freshman Jacob Benner (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) came through with a fifth place toss (142' 7") in the discus. Freshman Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) finished fifth in the 400 intermediate hurdles in :55.11 and senior Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) was fifth in the 110 highs in :15.67.
Junior Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was sixth in the shot (46' 3 ½") and seventh in the hammer (157' 0"). Freshman Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) cleared 14' 1 ¼" to take sixth in the pole vault. Junior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) was sixth in the 100 in :11.27 and junior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) took sixth in the 10,000 in 31:23.55. Junior Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) ran 1:54.74 and was sixth in the 800. Junior Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) placed sixth in the decathlon with 5,308 points.
Sophomore Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) turned a seventh place performance of 9:29.47 in the 3000 steeplechase. Devore was eighth in the 100 in :11.32 and senior Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) finished eighth in the 1500 in 3:58.03. Sophomore Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) placed eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 6' 2". Senior Matt Deets (Polo HS, Polo, Ill.) finished eighth in the decathlon with 5,086 points.
