Brock Dolar presents: "The Impact of Market Concentration on the Availability of Credit to Small Businesses in the Aftermath of the Financial Crisis of 2007-2008: A Market-Level Analysis
The U.S. banking industry experienced a widespread consolidation in the last two decades which raised concerns over the availability of banking services to small businesses. The issue becomes particularly important during a credit crunch when bank credit tends to bcome less accessible for small firms. In this paper, the relationship between market concentration and the availability of small business lending in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007-2008 is investigated. Using a dataset comprising banking markets in the state of California, the empirical results indicate that higher market concentration in rural banking markets has had a negative impact on the level of small businesses lending in the post-crisis era. We also find that some types of small business lending declines with increased market concentration in urban banking markets in the period after the financial crisis.
