2011-12 Season - Win over Dubuque moves record to 15-7
|Colin Arnold was perfect in four matches on Saturday, April 21. He won twice at singles to move to 19-5 on the year and twice at doubles with partner Jack Cullen to push their record to 16-3. Augustana split contests with Carthage (losing 5-4) and Dubuque (winning 6-3) to move to 15-7 this season.|
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - After dropping a very tough 5-4 decision to College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Carthage on Saturday morning, April 21, Augustana bounced back to defeat Dubuque in non-conference play by a score of 6-3. All the action took place at the Lower Campus Courts and when the day ended, the Vikings of first year head coach Jon Miedema had a 15-7 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the CCIW.
Sophomore Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) led the way for Augustana, winning all four of his matches. He won at number five singles against Carthage and then moved up to number three in the Dubuque match. He teamed with junior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) in both matches at number three doubles to pick up victories. Arnold is no 19-5 in singles action and he and Cullen have forged at 16-3 mark at doubles.
CARTHAGE 5, AUGUSTANA 4
The Vikings fell in CCIW play for the first time this season, dropping a tough 5-4 decision to Carthage on Saturday, April 21 at the Lower Campus Courts. The Vikings fell behind 2-1 after doubles play won the bottom three singles matches to come up just short of beating the Red Men for the first time since 1999.
The number three doubles team of sophomore Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and junior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) beat Alex McLean and Conor Moon 8-4 to move to 15-3 on the season.
Cullen beat McLean at number four 6-2; 1-6; 6-4 and is now even at 10-10 for the year. Arnold defeated Nick Boomgarden 6-2; 6-0 at number five to run his mark to 18-5 and sophomore Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) handled Brian Howe 6-3; 6-4 to up his record to 17-5.

AUGUSTANA 6, DUBUQUE 3
Augustana rebounded nicely from the loss to Carthage earlier in the day with an impressive 6-3 win over Dubuque, despite the fact that Miedema had to juggle his lineup. Both Adam DeSimone (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and Cullen were only available for doubles action due to various ailments.
Cullen and Arnold picked up an 8-0 win over Demetrius Johnson and Shawn Iben at number three doubles to move to 16-3 on the season. The number two doubles team of Lawrence (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat) and Will (Schiller International School, Leicester, England) beat Paul Roberts and Nikolav Gospodinov 8-5 at number two and are now 12-10.
Sophomore Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, DePere, Wis.) beat Roberts 6-2; 7-6 at number two and is now 17-9. Arnold's win came at number three over Johnson by a score of 6-1; 6-2 to move his mark to 18-5. Sophomore Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) jumped from number six to number four and beat Andrew Sheedy 6-2; 7-5 and is now 18-5. The other win for the Vikings came at number six where sophomore Grant Wick (Windsor HS, Ft. Collins, Colo.) moved to 7-2 by beating Michael Braden 6-1; 6-3.
Augustana is now 15-7 overall and has won eight of the last 10 matches.
