2012 Season - Pitchers stymie Knox in softball sweep

Freshman Jenna Teson picked up five hits in eight at-bats and scored two runs to help lead the Augustana offense in a double header sweep of Knox on April 18.

GALESBURG, Ill. - Pitching was clearly the difference as Augustana did not allow a run and only gave up two hits in sweeping Knox in a non-conference softball double header on Wednesday, April 18 in Galesburg. The Vikings won game one 9-0 and took game two 5-0 and run their record to 21-7 for the season.

Sophomore Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) picked up the victory in game one to move to 7-4 on the season while freshman Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) grabbed her first collegiate victory in game two. Augustana pitchers struck out a total of 16 Prairie Fire batters on the day.

The defense was a huge help as the Vikings played 12 innings on the day without committing an error.

GAME ONE - Augustana 9, Knox 0

Ledezma struck out eight while walking two and only allowed one single as she worked four innings before giving way to sophomore Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) for the final inning.

The Vikings pounded out 17 hits and scored in four of the five innings as the game was shortened due to the eight run rule. Sophomore shortstop Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) helped lead the offense with three hits with two runs scored and an RBI.

Six other Augustana players had two hits in the game. Freshman Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) went two for four with two runs scored while sophomore Kelsey Winter (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) was two for four with two runs scored and an RBI. Ledezma helped herself out by going two for three with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) had two hits in three at-bats with a run scored and a two run home run in a three-run third inning. Senior Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) was two for three with an RBI and Wiersema was two for three.

The Vikings scored a single run in the top of the first to go on top 1-0 and then added three in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

GAME TWO - Augustana 5, Knox 0

Wiersema got the call as the starting pitcher in game two and she responded by tossing six innings of one hit ball. She struck out seven and walked three.

While the offense wasn't as productive as in the first game, the Vikings did hammer 10 hits with Teson getting three to lead the way. Freshman Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) added two hits and an RBI. Winter got her second start at second base and she was one for three with two runs scored and an RBI. She hit a solo homer in the fifth and Ledezma homered to lead off the sixth.

Freshman Kailee Pasbrig (Conant HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) came in to pitch in the seventh and retired all three batters she faced.
