2012 Season - Augustana takes series finale over North Park

Sophomore right fielder Jacob VanDuyne went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two driven in Sunday as Augustana took the rubber game of its three-game set with North Park 13-3.

MOLINE, Ill.-Sophomore outfielder Jacob VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) had four hits and a rare "walk-off strikeout" Sunday as Augustana took the series finale against North Park 13-3 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. With the win, the hosts improve to 18-9 on the year and 6-6 in CCIW play, while North Park falls to 22-7 overall and 8-4 in the league.

VanDuyne led a 15-hit Viking attack in the contest shortened to seven innings by the ten-run rule. Four teammates added a pair of hits each as eight of the nine batters in the Augustana order had at least one hit. Augustana starter Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) battled his way through 6 1/3 inning to pick up the win and improve to 2-3 on the year.

As they did in the first two games of the series, the hosts fell behind early as North Park got to McIntosh for a pair of runs in the top of the second. However, Augustana bounced right back with four in the bottom half. Joe Cecchi (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) drew a one-out hit-by-pitch to start things and freshman Kyle Lenihnan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) reached on the first of six North Park errors in the game. Jim Sandberg (JK Mullen HS, Littleton, Colo.) followed with an RBI double to center and Lenihan scored to tie it when North Park bobbled the relay throw. VanDuyne and Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East, Lombard, Ill.) delivered RBI singles in the inning as well.

The hosts added a pair of runs in the third to make it 6-2. Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) led off with a double to left center and moved to third when Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) reached on another North Park miscue. Cecchi doubled down the left field line to score Stewart and knock North Park starter Paul Garcia out of the box. Schmidt later scored on a Lenihan ground out.

Each team tallied a run in the fourth and the score stood at 7-3 as Augustana came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. Leadoff hitter Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) drove a ball to the gap in right center and legged out a triple. He scored on a VanDuyne single to left and next four Vikings also came through with singles as Augustana put five runs on the board to extend the lead to 12-3.

After Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) came on in relief of McIntosh in the top of the seventh and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam, Augustana ended the game with a run in the bottom half. Serna led off with a double to left. The next hitter was VanDuyne, who was looking for his fifth hit of the contest. North Park reliver Travis Boyer got VanDuyne to strike out on a pitch in the dirt, but the speedy outfielder was able to beat catcher Tony Sanchez's throw at first and Serna came all the way around from second with no one covering the plate.

VanDuyne scored three times and drove in a pair. Stewart and Serna each had two hits and two runs scored. Juhl and Barker each had two hits as well. Everyone in the Augustana lineup scored at least one run and eight of nine drove in at least one run.
