NFL legend speaking to campus and community

April  12, 2012

Ken Anderson, NFL legend and Augustana alumnus, will be back on campus for two events in April. On Thursday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. in Centennial Hall (3703 7th Ave.), Anderson will present a free public lecture, “My Career as I Remember It.” On Friday, April 20, Anderson will be the featured speaker at the college’s 36th annual Business Day breakfast, a private event for students and local business leaders.

Karen M. Petersen, Business Day coordinator and director of business internships at Augustana, believes the interest in the college’s 36th annual Business Day is especially strong because Anderson will kick off the day’s activities. “We’re so pleased that Ken will be back on campus and deliver the keynote address at the Business Day breakfast,” said Petersen.

Petersen explained Business Day as “a premiere job-shadowing event exclusively for Augustana students.” After the breakfast and keynote address, students spend a day shadowing a business executive to learn how his or her academic path connects with the professional world.

Petersen said Anderson will speak at both events about “leadership and football – topics he knows plenty about.”

Anderson, a member of the college’s Class of 1971, enjoyed a stellar two-sport career at Augustana, excelling in football and basketball. He was a 1,000-point scorer on the basketball team, and he broke every record that had been set while playing quarterback for the Vikings.

Upon graduation, Anderson was drafted into the NFL by the Cincinnati Bengals, 67th overall in the 1971 draft. He played for the Bengals for his entire 15-year football career. After his playing days were over, Anderson coached the Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Augustana retired Anderson’s jersey No. 14 in 2011. In January 2012, Augustana announced that Anderson’s leadership was pivotal in a new plan to renovate the football field and enhance the physical education building. Tentative plans include stadium and locker room improvements, all-weather turf and the addition of team meeting rooms. Anderson is on the planning committee for the renovations project.
