2012 Season - Jones named CCIW's best - again

Junior Sarahbeth Jones has been named the "athlete of the week" in the CCIW for the second time in the last two weeks. She also broke an Augustana school record for the second time this outdoor season when she won the 5000 in 17:24.27 at the Wartburg Select Invitational in Waverly, Iowa on Friday, April 6. On March 24 of this year she set a new school mark in the 3000 with a time of 9:58.95 at the Viking Open.

For the second time in the last three weeks, Augustana junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) has been named the "Athlete of the Week" for women's track & field in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Once again, the honor came after Jones took down a long-standing school record.

She romped to victory in the 5000 at the Wartburg Select on Friday, April 6 in Waverly, Iowa with a time of 17:24.27. In the process she erased the 29-year old school record of 17:28.53 set by Kim Lehmann in 1983. Back on March 24, Jones broke the school record in the 3000 with a winning time of 9:58.95 at the Viking Open at Paul V. Olsen Track.  That took down the former school mark of 10:02.85 set by Viking All-American Susan Paige back in 1998. She was named the "Athlete of the Week" in the CCIW after that performance as well.

So far this season Jones also has Augustana's best performance in the 1500 with a time of 4:41.42, which she turned in at the Viking Open on March 24. She also anchored the distance medley to a season's best time of 12:24.79 at the Viking Olympics on March 30.

Jones came into the outdoor season off a terrific indoor campaign where she was name the "Most Valuable Runner" for the Vikings. She captured the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championship in the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:21.38 at the conference meet on February 25 at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. She also anchored the Vikings distance medley relay to victory in a school record time of 12:13.73, and finished third in the mile in 5:01.

She has been a two time place winner in the 800 at the CCIW outdoor championship meet during the first two years of her career at Augustana. This past winter she won "Runner of the Week" honors on January 24 from the CCIW. She was also honored by the league as a recipient of the Jack Swartz Award for her combination of athletic prowess and academic excellence in both the fall and winter seasons.

The daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Jones of Glen Allen, Virginia, Sarahbeth is and English and mass communications major.
