2012 Season - Vikings sweep to open CCIW play

Jenna Teson had three hits in the first game and scored two runs on the day as Augustana swept Wheaton 5-4 and 10-1 to open the CCIW season.

WHEATON, Ill. - Augustana got off to a good start in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball action on Thursday, April 5 by sweeping a double header on the road at Wheaton. The Vikings beat the Thunder 5-4 in eight innings in the first game and then took game two 10-1 in a contest that was shortened to just five innings due to the mercy rule.

It was the CCIW opener for both teams and veteran head coach Kris Kistler's team picked up a huge road sweep en route to moving to 17-5 overall on the year. The Vikings have also won six consecutive games.

GAME 1: Augustana 5, Wheaton 4 in eight innings

Sophomore Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) pulled a two-out single through the left side of the infield to scored freshman Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) with what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. That was enough as Augustana topped Wheaton 5-4 in eight innings in the CCIW opener for both teams.

Sophomore Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) worked seven innings and picked up the victory, moving to a sparkling 11-1 on the season. She struck out five but was uncharacteristically wild as she allowed six walks and hit two batters. She also gave up six hits. Sophomore Jamie Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) worked the bottom of the eighth after Augustana scored and picked up her first save of the season.

Through four innings the contest was scoreless but the Vikings broke through for two runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) ripped a double to left field with one out to score seniors Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.).

Wheaton took advanced of an Augustana error in the bottom of the sixth to put four runs on the board and take a 4-2 lead heading into the last at-bat for the Vikings. Watson and Ledezma opened the inning with walks. Pinch hitter Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) forced Watson at third for the first out of the inning. Freshman Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) pinch ran for Ledezma and sophomore Kelsey Winter (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) replaced Nelson on the bases. A passed ball moved each runner up a base and freshman Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) singled through the right side to score a pair of runs and tie up the game.

Hintz worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the inning when she walked two and hit a batter.

That left it up to the offense in the eighth and Teson opened the inning with a double to left field and scored on Watson's single. Rehmert gave up one walk in the bottom of the eighth but that was all as she preserved the victory.

GAME 2: Augustana 10, Wheaton 1

After surviving a nail-biter in the first game, the Vikings left no doubt in the second game as they rolled to a 10-1 win in a contest shortened to five innings. Ledezma went the distance and gave up just one run on  three hits while striking out four and pushing her record to 5-3.

In CCIW games the teams flip-flop as the home club so after Ledezma got through the top of the first without allowing a run, her teammates on offense went to work. Teson led things off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Behnke. Teson scampered to third on a wild pitch and after Watson coaxed a walk, Ledezma singled to right field to scored Teson and push Watson to third. A walk to Nelson loaded the bases and freshman Christie Wiersema delivered a single up the middle that scored Ledezma and Watson. A passed ball moved Nelson to third and Wiersema to second and then catcher Jaclyn Wrona (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) reached on a costly Wheaton error brought both Wiersema and Nelson around to score to make it 5-0.

Wiersema's two-out single in the second drove in two runs to make it 7-0 and Watson drove in two more in the third with a single through the right side. The final Augustana run came in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) singled to drive in pinch runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.).
