2012 Season - Vikings ranked sixth in NCAA Division III
![]() |
| The Augustana Vikings are currently ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division III power dual meet ranking. |
After a long indoor season, the Augustana women’s track and field team was anxious for outdoors to begin. After two solid performances in their first two meets, the Vikings proved they were ready for it. In the first NCAA Division III outdoor national dual meet rankings, Augustana is ranked sixth with 146.97 points.
This poll, conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, quantifies the depth of each team. The team’s total score is the sum of all points earned in each event. Two individual athletes are scored per event, as well as one relay team. The points are based on the best marks of an event in the current season, with the faster times and greater distances worth more.
California Lutheran is ranked the top team in the nation, having scored 165.67 points. Ithaca is second with 159.49, followed by Sailsbury with 153.50 and Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps with 151.44. Ohio Wesleyan (148.67) is just in front of Augustana, while Emory holds on to the seventh spot with 143.70 points. Redlands, North Central and Texas Lutheran close out the top ten, with 142.47, 139.64, and 138.59 points respectively.
Head Coach Fred Whiteside’s team started the season on the right foot, winning the eight-team Viking Open on Saturday, March 24th. They scored 200.5 points, beating UW-Whitewater by over 30 points. On Friday March 30 and Saturday March 31, Augustana hosted the Viking Olympics where they placed second in the seven-team field. Only Division III indoor national champion Wartburg beat the Vikings, scoring 326.5 points to Augustana’s 198 points.
Augustana will compete in the Wartburg Select Invitational on Friday, April 6 in Waverly, Iowa.
