Gwendolyn Oxenham/Pelada Week Is Here!
Gwendolyn Oxenham, a talented filmmaker, author and soccer player will be spending time on campus this week, highlighted by her convocation message, "What Would You Do If You Could Do Anything?" Thursday April 12, at 10:30 am in Centennial Hall. Oxenham will talk about her journey across the globe, what she learned about soccer's ability to unite and transcend, and what she discovered about following one's dreams.
Pelada features the documentary's producers Oxenham and Luke Boughen, both former Division I soccer players. In the documentary, Boughen and Oxenham play with Bolivian prisoners, moonshine brewers in Kenya, and people in the 25 countries they visited. Pelada shows how one game can create a universal bond. Oxenham said, "[Soccer is] such a connective force. The ability to kick a ball can create such an intimacy and feeling of community. "
While studying English and documentary studies at Duke University, Oxenham was the youngest Division I athlete in NCAA history at the age of 16. She was a team captain, made two All-ACC teams, led Duke in assists, and was named Most Inspirational Player. She received her master's in creative writing at the University of Notre Dame, where she won the 2006 Nicholas Sparks Prize, and her first book, Finding the Game, is due out in June 2012.
In addition to a number of class visits by Oxenham, below are the campus-wide Pelada/Oxenham events this week:
- Tuesday April 10: Pelada Screening, 7:30 pm in Olin Auditorium (with dessert bar!). Sponsored by the Redwood Movement and the Community Engagement Center.
