2012 Season - Augustana takes team title at Viking Olympics

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Augustana won seven individual events and two relays Saturday to capture the team title at the Viking Olympics. The hosts compiled 373 points to easily outdistance second-place Wartburg's 161.
Junior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) led a one through five sweep for the Vikings in the 1500. Smith ran a 3:56.87. Senior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) was second in 3:57.79, followed by juniors Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) (3:59.59) and Dennis O'Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) (4:00.13) and senior Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) (4:00.32).
Junior Joe Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and freshman Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) were first and second in the 800. Zahn finished in 1:55.24 and Dal Pozzo in 1:55.75.
In the 200, junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) won in a time of :21.52, while freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and junior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) were fourth and fifth in :22.15 and :22.35, respectively.
Freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) won the 400 hurdles in :53.95, while senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) was third in :54.22. Davis also garnered a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles with a time of :14.86.
Augustana took first and fourth in both the discus and 5000 meters. Senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) won the discus with a toss of 165' 3" and freshman Jacob Benner (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) was fourth with a mark of 150' 11". Christensen was also fifth in the shot with a throw of 46' 8¾". Juniors Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) ran 15:00.49 and 15:30.18, respectively, to finish first and fourth in the 5000.
Augustana's other individual winner Saturday was freshman long jumper Torre Harrell (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) who sailed 23' 6¼".
The Vikings also got wins in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The 400 relay team of junior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.), Patton, Cline and Rindone won in :41.88 and the 1600 relay unit of Davis, Voland, sophomore Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) and Patton won in 3:16.45.
Sophomore Joshua Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) and juniors Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) and Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) were second, third and fourth, respectively in the decathlon. Eisenberg finished with 5,511 points with Gale compiling 5,477 and Williams 5,344. In the 400, Spivey ran a :50.32 to finish second and sophomore Matt Dickey (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.) was fourth in :50.88.
Junior Luke Anderson (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) threw the javelin 166' 8" to finish third. In the 100, Mays ran an :11.23 for fourth place, finishing two one-hundredths of a second ahead of fifth-place Cline.
The Vikings will be competing Friday, April 6 at the Wartburg Select in Waverly, Iowa. That meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
