2012 Season - Hillyer's win in pole vault leads Vikings

Sophomore Taelar Hillyer won the pole vault on the first day of competition in the Viking Olympics with a clearance of 11' 2 1/4". Augustana is currently in first place by one point over St. Ambrose.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Sophomore Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) won the pole vault to help Augustana to a narrow one-point lead in the Viking Olympics on Friday, March 30 at Paul V. Olsen Track. After eight events, the Vikings lead the seven-team meet with 70 points, just one digit ahead of St. Ambrose's second place total of 69. Wartburg is third with 58 while Loras (53), Ashford (15), Dubuque (8) and Iowa Wesleyan (1) rounded out the field.

Hillyer soared of 11' 2 ¼" on her second attempt to win the pole vault by over a foot. While she was the lone individual winner for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside's Vikings on the first day, Augustana did pick up a victory in the distance medley with a time of 12:24.79. The Vikings got a second from the 800 meter relay team with a clocking of 1:59.13 and a third in the 3200 relay in 10:12.42.

Augustana had three runners in the top five in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Kristen Whiteside (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) took second in 12:16.51 with sophomore Kelsey Stockert (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Mapleton, Ill.) grabbing fourth in 12:21.76 and freshman Kris Bowen (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) nailing down fifth in 12:24.53.

Senior Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) was third in the javelin with a toss of 113' 9" and junior Jordan Mauerman (Albany HS, Albany, Wis.) took fifth in 107' 11".
