2012 Season - Augustana women claim Spring Opener

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) broke Susan Paige's school record in the 3000 meters Saturday to help the Vikings claim the team title at the Augustana Spring Opener at Ericson Field. Jones also won the 1500 as the hosts bested an eight team field.

Jones won the 3000 in 9:58.95, breaking Paige's record of 10:02.85 set in 1998. Augustana also took third and fifth in the event with juniors Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) and Tata Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Joliet, Ill.) running 11:08.16 and 11:10.17, respectively. Jones' 4:41.42 in the 1500 was also a winner. Freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) was third in 4:57.36, followed by classmates Kris Bowen (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.), fourth in 5:10.91 and Lizzie Lundine (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.), fifth in 5:13.49.

Other winners for the Vikings included sophomore Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) with a :1:05.67 in the 400 hurdles, sophomore Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) with a 2:21.29 in the 800, sophomore Taelar Hillyer (Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) with an 11' 3¾" in the pole vault and the 9:44.06 posted by the 4x800 relay team of junior Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.), freshman Lorraine Stamberger (La Moille HS, La Moille, Ill.), Bacon and Heifner. Smith also finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of :15.75.

The Viking 4x400 relay of Smith, Prazak, senior Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) and Benge finished second in 4:10.60. Sophomore Liana Beauchmap (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) took second in the hammer throw with a heave of 148' 9" and senior Amber Gruber (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was fifth with a mark of 135' 6". Gale also grabbed a pair of individual fourth-place finishes, running a :13.14 in the 100 and clearing 8' 9¾" in the pole vault.

Freshman Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) was third in the long jump (16' 7¼") and fourth in the triple jump (34' ¾"). Junior Samantha Bazely (Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) was fifth in the latter event, going 33' 1¼". Senior Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) threw the javelin 104' 7" to place third, while junior Jordan Mauerman (Albany HS, Albany, Wis.) was fifth with a 102' 3". Senior Sarah Johnson ran a 12:21.70 to take third in the 3000 steeplechase and sophomore Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) was fourth in the high jump, clearing 4' 11¾".

Augustana finished with 200.5 points, outdistancing second-place Wisconsin-Whitewater, who compiled 167.5. St. Ambrose was third with 143.5, Central was fourth with 127 and fifth-place Ashford topped 100 points as well, finishing with 112.
