2012 Season - 2012 MEN'S TRACK & FIELD INDOOR REVIEW

Sophomore Josh Eisenberg set a new school record this past winter in the pentathlon with 4,313 points.

Vikings win four events and finish second at CCIW Championships; set seven school records on the year; finish the season ranked fifth in nation in dual meet power ranking

Junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) set three school records this year and was one of four individual CCIW champions as Augustana took second place at the 2012 conference indoor meet in Naperville, Illinois. Coach Paul Olsen's team won three meets during the indoor season, taking team titles at the Spartan and A.Y. McDonald Invitationals in Dubuque, Iowa and the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular in Waverly, Iowa. In addition to Rindone's, the Vikings set four other school records and ended up fifth in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association dual meet rankings.

Rindone won the 200 meters at the CCIW meet in a school-record :21.97, bettering the time of :22.13 he set earlier this year. He also broke his own mark at 60 meters with a :06.95 at the CCIW meet. He finished second in a photo finish in that event. His third school record was a :35.07 in the 300 at the Midwest Invitational, surpassing the :35.24 put up by freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) earlier in the season. Voland anchored Augustana's school-record 4x200 relay, teaming with freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.), sophomore Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.) and junior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) to run a 1:30.04 at the A.Y. McDonald Invitational. The previous 800 relay standard had stood for 16 years.

Other school marks set during this year's indoor season included a 60' 3¾" in the weight throw by senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.), as well as sophomore Josh Eisenberg's (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) 4,313 points in the pentathlon and senior Greg Davis' (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) CCIW-winning :08.34 in the 60-meter hurdles.

In addition to Rindone and Davis, junior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) and senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) also won CCIW individual titles. Smith finished the mile in 4:13.08 and Christensen put the shot 52' 4". Augustana finished second in the team standings with 169.5 points. Eventual national champion North Central won the conference meet with 261 points.

A total of seven Viking individuals and one relay team reached NCAA qualifying marks this year, although none competed at the national meet. Rindone (60 & 400), Benning (weight throw), Christensen (weight throw & shot put), Davis (60 hurdles) and Smith (mile), along with senior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) and junior Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) in the 5000, all reached individual qualifying marks, as did Voland, freshman Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.), Davis and Rindone in the 4x400 relay.

Olsen's squad opened the season by winning four events to capture the nine-team Spartan Invitational on January 14. The Vikings won 11 events the next week at the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois, where no team scores were compiled. On January 28, Augustana took the team title at the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular, bettering the hosts and Grand View by a comfortable margin. On February 3, the Vikings finished fifth in a seven-team field that included four of the top five USTFCCCA-ranked outfits at Wisconsin-Whitewater's Converse Invitational.

On February 11, a split squad won four individual events and one relay the Augustana Invitational and a pair of individual events at the Darren Young Classic in Grinnell, Iowa.

Augustana closed the pre-conference schedule by besting 11 other teams at the University of Dubuque's A.Y. McDonald Invitational on February 18. The Vikings won seven individual events and three relays to more than triple the point total of second-place Carroll.

Other top performers for Augustana this season included sophomore Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), who had team-bests of 1:23.82 in the 600 and 1:57.49 in the 800. Senior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) went 22' 3" in the long jump and 42' 8" in the triple jump. Freshman pole vaulter Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) cleared 14' 7¼" three times and junior Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) once. Freshman Josh Prosser (Eureka HS, Goodfield, Ill.) went 6' 6" in the high jump.
