2012 Season - Vikings finish indoor season ranked 5th in nation

Veteran head coach Paul Olsen guided his 2012 Vikings to a fifth place ranking in the final 2012 NCAA Division III indoor track & field indoor dual meet ranking.

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – The Augustana men’s track and field team ended its indoor season on a high note, securing a second place finish at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championships. The Vikings finished the year ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III national rankings. The Vikings, who have been ranked lower than sixth all season, moved up one spot to fifth in the final indoor edition of the Dual Meet Rankings. The squad increased its point total for the sixth consecutive week to 157.78, up from 152.38 last week.

This poll, conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, quantifies the depth of each team. The team’s total score is the sum of all points earned in each event. Two individual athletes are scored per event, as well as one relay team. The points are based on the best marks of an event in the current season, with the faster times and farther distances worth more.

The number one ranked team in the country is Wisconsin-LaCrosse with 167.44 points while Wisconsin-Eau Claire is second with 165.17. North Central has 164.3 points in third and Wisconsin-Whitewater is in fourth with 161.89. Augustana is in fifth with 157.78, just ahead of Tufts’ 156.58. Rounding out the top 10 are Wisconsin-Stout (155.72), Bates (155.15), Wabash (152.78) and Wartburg (150.88).

The Vikings racked up 169.5 points to finish 90 points behind North Central, and over 100 points in front of third place Carthage. Augustana’s performance at the meet was highlighted by four individual conference championships. Senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) won the shot put with a heave of 52’4”, and classmate Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) won the 60 meter high hurdles in :08.34. The Vikings also placed fourth at the Darren Young Classic, and fifth at the highly competitive Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational. Over the course of the indoor segment, Viking runners and throwers combined to break five school records. Rindone broke his own indoor school record in the 300, running 35.07 early on at the Midwest Invitational on January 21. He also set the 60 meter school record in 7.05 a couple of weeks later on February 3, and his 21.97 performance in the 200 at the conference meet earned him his third school record of the season.
