Geifman Endowment in Judaica
Every year, the Geifman Endowment in Judaica awards a Fellowship in Jewish Culture, sponsors a student competition and a guest lecture. The endowment was established by the late Gerry and Morris M. Geifman for the acquisition of materials in Judaic studies and culture; guest lecturers in Judaic studies and culture; student awards or scholarships; and other program expenditures.
Geifman Fellowship in Jewish Culture
The Geifman Fellowship in Jewish Culture encourages students to learn about an aspect of Jewish culture, to develop a lesson plan on that subject for public school students, and to present the lesson in area public schools. The purpose of the fellowship is to enhance multicultural learning experiences for students at Augustana College and in the community at large.
Fellowship stipend: $2,000. Fellows may apply for up to $150 in additional funds for necessary expenses such as travel and materials.
Qualifications: Any first-, second-, or third-year Augustana student is eligible to apply. Students may apply individually or in groups. A group fellowship will be funded as if it were an individual, at the level of $2,000.
Applications: Students who wish to apply for a fellowship will submit a proposal for a 30-minute lesson on an aspect of Jewish culture, such as music, dance, theatre, cuisine, literature, or history. If the student, or group of students, is accepted as a fellow, the student will develop the lesson during the summer. Limited coaching in lesson content and execution will be available for the fellow. During the following school year, the fellow will offer to present the lesson in area schools which will involve contacting schools and teachers, arranging times to present, and presenting the lesson. Fellows will submit a report on their experience by May 1 of the year in which they hold the fellowship.
Students should submit the following:
• A completed application form
• A thorough proposal for a 30-minute lesson plan related to Jewish culture that may include:
o Proposed title of the lesson plan
o Focus statement (topic the lesson will concentrate on)
o Student learning objectives (3 to 5)
o Description of content of lesson
o Student activities
o Citations to sources used in developing the proposal (according to a citation style)
o Include your name on the proposal as well as on the application form.
• The application form and proposal should be submitted electronically to margaretrogal@augustana.edu.
Due date and timeline: The deadline for applications for the 2013-14 Fellowship is May 1, 2013. Fellows will be notified of acceptance by May 15. The lesson must be developed during the summer and early fall of 2013; Rabbi Tamar Grimm of Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri-City Jewish Center will be available for guidance in presenting Jewish content. A faculty member in the education department also will be available for consultation. During the school year, the fellow will present the lesson at least three times in area schools. A one- to two-page reflection will be due to the Geifman Committee by May 1, 2014.

Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies
The Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies is an annual student competition with an award of $300. The 2013 theme is "A Response to the Holocaust."
Submissions may include essays, research papers, poems, plays, artwork, or other creative expression.
All materials must be submitted by 4 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2013. Please include the application form.
