2012 Season - Vikings win seventh straight in softball

Abbi Staples had a pair of hits, a walk and scored a run as Augustana defeated SUNY-Canton 8-0 to run its winning streak to seven straight on Wednesday, February 29 in Orlando, Florida.

CLERMONT, Florida - Sophomore Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout to help lead Augustana to an 8-0 victory over SUNY-Canton on Wednesday, February 29 in Clermont, Florida. The victory was the seventh straight for head coach Kris Kistler's Vikings, who are now 7-1 on the young season.

Hintz was tremendous on the mound as she struck out eight and walked just two while going the distance in the six-inning game that was shortened due to the eight run rule. She moved her record to 5-0 on the season and she helped herself at the plate as well. Hintz had three hits and picked up an RBI as well.

The game was scoreless through three innings when the Vikings broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Freshman Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) led things off with an infield single and she promptly gave way to pinch-runner Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.). She advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. She scored the game's first run on a single to center by Hintz. Pinch runner Chelse Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) replaced Hintz and went to second on a single by Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.). A single by Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) loaded the bases and Lavin scored on a fielder's choice by Amanda Johnson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.).

Courtney Ledezma's (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) triple led off the fifth with a triple and scored on a ground out by Behnke to make it 3-0.

The Vikings put five runs on the board in the top of the fifth with a two run double by Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) providing the big blow.

Hintz led the offense with three hits and an RBI while Watson, Staples and Wiersema each had two hits while Watson and Gibbs each drove in a pair.
