2012 Season - Vikings win four events at CCIW meet

With head coach Paul Olsen yelling encouragement, junior Justin Smith speeds to victory in the mile at the CCIW Indoor Championships on Saturday, February 25 in Naperville, Illinois with a time of 4:13.08.

Four Augustana athletes won individual titles at the 2012 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, February 25 in Naperville, Illinois. The Vikings placed second in the team championship with 169.5 points.

North Central won the team title with 261 points. Carthage was third with 105.5 and Illinois Wesleyan was fourth with 48.5. Wheaton (34), Elmhurst (20), Millikin (14) and North Park (11) rounded out the field.

Senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.), senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) and juniors Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) and Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) brought home individual gold medals for veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team.

Christensen won the shot put with a toss of 52' 4" while teammates Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) and Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) were taking fifth (46' 10 ¾") and sixth (46' 5 ½") respectively.

Davis won the 60 high hurdles in :08.34 with freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) grabbing fourth in :08.47.

Smith ran a terrific mile to win in 4:13.08 with Dennis O'Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) finishing eighth in 4:20.67.

Rindone took the 200 in :21.97 with freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) placing fifth in :22.38 and Voland taking seventh in :22.48. Rindone was also second in the 60 in :06.95 while David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.) was fifth in :07.14 and junior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) was sixth in :07.17.

Josh Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) scored 4,313 points to place second in the heptathlon. Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) was third with 4,302 points and Matt Deets (Polo HS, Polo, Ill.) was seventh with 3,951. Josh Prosser (Eureka HS, Goodfield, Ill.) was third in the high jump with a leap of 6' 5" and Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) was fourth at 6' 4". Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 42' 8".

Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) finished third in the 3000 in 8:35.50 with Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) grabbing fifth in 8:37.80. Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was eighth in 8:39.08. Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) placed eighth in the 400 in :50.77.

The 1600 relay team was third in 3:20.14.
