2012 Season - Distance medley wins CCIW title

Sophomore Kate Benge handled the lead-off leg for the Vikings victorious distance medley relay at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor championship on Friday, February 24. Augustana won the event in Naperville, Illinois with a time of 12:13.73.

The final event of the day proved to be the best for Augustana on the first day of competition at the 2012 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track & field championships. The Vikings won the distance medley with a time of 12:13.73 on Friday, February 24 in Naperville, Illinois.

The team of sophomore Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), sophomore Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) and junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) won the event by a margin of nearly five seconds over runner-up Illinois Wesleyan (12:18.71).

Sophomore Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman Catholic HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took third in the pole vault with a leap of 11' ¾" and senior Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) placed sixth with a clearance of 9' 1". Sophomore Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) finished sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 47' 5 ¼".

After six events the Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside were in fifth place with 22 points. North Central leads with 56 points, followed by Millikin with 37.5 and Illinois Wesleyan with 35. Carthage has 24.5 and is in fourth just in front of Augustana. Wheaton (14), Elmhurst (3) and North Park (2) round out the field.

North Central leads the team standings after five events with 79 points while the Vikings are second with 44.5. Carthage is third with 38 and Illinois Wesleyan is fourth with 20.5. Wheaton (6), Elmhurst (4), Millikin (2) and North Park (1) round out the field.
