2012 Season - Benning named CCIW "Athlete of the Week"
|Senior Brian Benning was named the "Field Athlete of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin after setting a new Augustana school record and a new Dubuque Field House record in the weight throw. He recorded a makr of 60' 3 3/4" at the Dubuque Invitational on Saturday, February 18.|
Augustana senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) has been selected as the "Athlete of the Week" for men's track & field in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Benning established a new school record in the weight throw at the Dubuque Invitational on Saturday, February 18.
Benning won the event with a toss of 60' 3 ¾", breaking the old school record of 60' 2 ½" set by current teammate Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) in 2011. Benning also broke the field house record, which was 58' 2" set by another former Augustana thrower, Darin Decker, in 2010. Benning also took second in the shot put at the Dubuque Invitational with a toss of 46' 7 ¼".
Benning's previous best this season had been a toss of 58' 7 ¼" at the Whitewater Invitational on February 3. He set a field house record at Grinnell College at the Darren Young Classic on February 11 when he won the weight throw with a toss of 58' 6 ¾". He also won the weight throw at the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular on January 28 in Waverly, Iowa and at the Sol Butler Invitational on January 14 in Dubuque, Iowa.
A team captain this year, he was an NCAA Division III national meet qualifier in the weight throw last year as a junior. He was the winner of the Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW after the winter sports campaign in 2011 for his combination of athletic prowess and academic excellence. He is majoring in education and Spanish at Augustana.
