ProFair - Our students and alumni benefit from professional networking, sharpening interview skills and exploring career opportunities. This is not just for business and accounting students! Careers and internships in various disciplines as well as non-profit and government organizations will be represented. We encourage students at any point in their undergraduate education to attend. It's never too early to begin honing your professional skills. We have had students find their future employers at fairs during their sophomore year. Faculty are welcome as well. There will be a shuttle bus running in a continuous loop between Centennial Hall and the Rogolski Center. Limited parking is available on St. Ambrose Campus.

International and Off-campus Programs
IOP and Augustana faculty create two new exchange programs this year.
In partnership with the Asian Studies and Scandinavian Studies programs, IOP confirms the creation of two new exchange programs beginning in 2012-2013. You can expect to see students from Kobe City University of Foreign Studies on campus next Fall and students from Uppsala in your classes in the Fall of 2013. Augustana students will be visiting Japan for a 3 month intensive language program as their part of the Kobe exchange, while others will spend either a semester or a year in Sweden studying at Uppsala.
Both of these programs allow students to study abroad without paying program fees. In both programs standard tuition is paid to Augustana while housing is arranged in the host countries by our partner universities and paid out-of-pocket by our students. Students have already been accepted to apply to Kobe for study next spring and we hope to have 2-3 students accepted into Uppsala this April.
IOP grants travel funds to three Augustana faculty for summer development programs.
IOP has awarded grants of $3,000 each to Dr. Rob Elfline (Music), Dr. Laura Hartman (Religion) and Dr. Jon Hurty (Music) for summer faculty development projects. Drs. Elfline and Hartman will be travelling to Europe to participate in seminars sponsored by CIEE in Ireland and Sweden respectively. Dr. Hurty will be using the funds to build relationships and possibly a cooperative music program between Augustana and Tumaini University, an ELCA-affiliated university in Tanzania. IOP Faculty grants can be used to fund airfare, lodging, program fees or other travel-related expenses. We offer these grants each year, with announcements in the Fall of upcoming CIEE programs and applications in January. Next year it could be you.
Augustana Cracks the Top 40
The IEE Open Doors Report for 2011 has come out and Augie has made the Top 40. This report, the nation's most comprehensive study of campus internationalization and study abroad, ranks schools in several different categories for their international student population and the number of students who study abroad. For the first time, Augustana has qualified for the Top 40 baccalaureate institutions by sending 268 students abroad in the 2009-2010 academic year. We currently rank 36th in the nation, and with even higher numbers to be reported for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 we should remain a regular on this list, possibly cracking the top 30 in the next couple of years. With faculty support, our international programs have begun to consistently grow to over 300 students a year, meeting and surpassing the goal of 40% participation in the college's strategic plan, and getting us noticed by studies such as Open Doors. Congratulations to everyone involved in creating and running programs as well as everyone who encouraged a student to apply to study abroad.
Mike Egan, Recipient of Service-Learning Grant Award
The CEC Service-Learning Grant provides an incentive for faculty members to develop a proposal for a "Service-Learning Designated Course." This is a "rolling application," thus we are awarding these grants throughout the year (i.e. there is no deadline).
A $500 award is given for each course that one or more faculty members design and have approved as an official "Service-Learning Designated Course." Half the award is distributed upon approval of the Service-Learning proposal by the Faculty Senate. The remaining $250 is distributed on the first day the course is taught.
Mike Egan has developed a pioneering service-learning course that is among the LSFY103 offerings for next term. Urban (School) Legends? Examining Conditions in Inner City Schools has attracted a full class of eager first-year students. Mike and his students will delve into "continuing concerns about segregation, disparities in the distribution of material resources across schools, disparities in access to challenging curricula, problematic notions of educational opportunity, challenges posed by immigration, and proposed yet unproven "solutions" to urban school problems the disparities." The course includes service work that will enrich and reinforce the course content. Students will serve weekly at Francis Willard Elementary School in Rock Island. In addition, they will be matched with high school students from the EPIC Academy charter school in south Chicago. After weeks of exchanging letters via email with pen pals, the class will visit EPIC Academy and meet with their pen pals and the staff.
Please be sure to congratulate Mike when you see him! I am happy to publicly thank him for creating novel opportunities for Augustana students. These service-learning experiences will, I have no doubt, create a profound, ‘high-impact,' learning experience. Evidence has shown this often produces students who are more culturally sensitive and civically engaged.
THANK YOU!!
Darrin Good, Director of Service Learning and Leadership Initiatives
