2011-2012 Fall sports
The Vikings finished with an 11-8-1 overall record, marking the program’s 10th consecutive winning season. Coach Scott Mejia’s squad also had its 10th straight winning season in conference play, finishing 4-3 and tied for fourth in the CCIW. Midfielder Taylor Moesle ’13 and goalkeeper Kayla Radloff ’12 were first team All-CCIW selections. This marks Radloff’s third consecutive first team All-CCIW recognition. She made 102 saves on the season and sported a .843 save percentage and a 1.09 goals against average. Midfielder Jessica Dodds ’12 was a first team Capital One Academic All-District honoree.
Building on the excitement of competing at a new facility--Thorson-Lucken Field--Coach Brenton Joseph’s team compiled a 13-6-0 overall record. The 13 victories are the most for the Vikings since the 2003 squad went 13-6-1, and this year's .684 winning percentage is the highest since the school-record .825 mark (16-3-1) posted by the 2002 team. The Vikings rode a defense that allowed just 19 goals in 19 games and an offense led by senior forward Sean Fidlow’s 13 goals. Fidlow and defender Michael Buric ’14 were each named to the All-CCIW second team.
Women’s cross country
Led by a 27th-place individual finish from Sarahbeth Jones ’13, the Vikings finished 13th at the NCAA Midwest Regional held at Saukie Golf Course, Rock Island. Jones finished the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:51.2. Becca Sund ’15 and Jessica Bacon ’15 were Augustana’s top finishers behind Jones. Sund ran a 23:30.3 to take 52nd place, while Bacon was 81st in a time of 24:08.8. Thanks to another sterling performance from Jones, Augustana matched its highest performance in the CCIW championship since 2007 with a third-place finish.
Men’s cross country
Michael Tisza ’12 wrapped up the cross country portion of his career by placing 110th in the NCAA Division III national cross country meet. Tisza, who qualified for the national meet by placing 15th in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:21.52. He was trying to duplicate Matt Bowman’s All-American performance of a year ago, but was 34 seconds behind the final All-American spot. Coach Paul Olsen's Vikings, which placed seventh in the Midwest Regional, ended the season ranked 25th in NCAA Division III.
Augustana finished the season 2-8 overall and tied for fifth in the CCIW at 2-5. Three of the team’s losses were to NCAA playoff qualifiers and a fourth came at the hands of an 8-2 Adrian team. The Vikings got their first win of the season, 19-13 over Carthage at Ericson Field, and followed that up with a 27-24 Homecoming win over North Park. In that game, Augustana was decked out in special gold jerseys, the first time since 1983 the Vikings had worn gold. Quarterback David Lee ’12 closed the book on a record-setting career and long-time Viking assistant and former head coach Tom Schmulbach wrapped up a remarkable 30 years on the Augustana sidelines. Linebacker Erik Westerberg ’14 and punter Arnie Fitzwater ’13 were named to the CCIW all-conference first team and the 2011 D3football.com All-North Region football second team. Three players were selected to play in the 2011 Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) on December 17 at the 5,000-seat El Tempo del Dolor (The Temple of Pain) in Puebla, Mexico. Defensive back Ben Hall ’12, offensive lineman Kelly Clennon ’12 and quarterback David Lee ’12 represented Augustana. Lee also was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
To wrap up the fall season, the Vikings finished fourth at the CCIW Championships. The top four finish means Augustana will play in the spring for the right to move on to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Kim Sawyer ’14 was named to first-team all-conference and Brittany Reece ’12 was named to the second team. Sawyer led the Vikings this season with a 17-4 record at No. 1 singles. This moves her all-time singles record to 46-11 for a .807 winning percentage that currently ranks first on the school’s all-time singles winning percentage list.
With just one senior and two juniors on the roster, the Vikings were not immune to the predictable growing pains. The experience gained during the 9-23 campaign should prove invaluable in the years ahead. Brianna Skeens ’12, the lone senior on the team, led the team in kills with 331 in 111 games played for a 2.98 average. She had the highest kill percentage and was second on the team in total blocks with 76. Outside hitter Emily Leazer ’15 was second on the team in kills and was No. 1 in service aces with 36.
Head coach Ron Standley's Vikings compiled six top-five finishes in their eight events last fall. Captain Brittany Carr ’12 led the team with a scoring average of 88.1, two strokes better than her average from last season. Carr also led the team with two top-five finishes and three top-10 finishes. Teammate Morgan Wilkinson ’13 took three strokes off her scoring average from last fall to post the team's second best average at 88.6. The Vikings completed its season with a fourth-place finish at the CCIW tournament.
