2012 Season - Vikings win 11 events and team title at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Augustana men won eleven events this weekend and claimed the team title at the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular. The Vikings totaled 305 points to outdistance Wartburg (179.5) and Grand View (100.5).
Coach Paul Olsen's relay teams performed exceptionally well. The 4x200 unit of freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.), sophomore Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, La Fox, Ill.), freshman Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) and sophomore Matt Dickey (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.) missed a school record by four one hundredths of a second, finishing in 1:31.29.
The Vikings also picked up wins in the 4x400 and distance medley relays. The 4x400 team of sophomore Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.), senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.), sophomore Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) finished in 3:24.18 and the distance medley unit ran a 10:38.87. That team consisted of freshman Keegan Buttimer (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.), junior Ryan Brummett (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.), junior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) and sophomore Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.).
Augustana swept the top three spots at 1000 meters and in the pole vault. Smith won the 1000 in 2:37.03. Freshman Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was second in 2:39.99 and junior Dennis O'Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) finished third in 2:40.98. Junior Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) won the pole vault, clearing 13' 11¼" and teammates freshman Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and senior Brett Bernatowicz (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) each went 12' 11½" to tie for second.
The Vikings finished first and second in the 60-meter hurdles, 800 meters and mile. Davis and Voland finished 1-2 in the hurdles, running :08.47 and :08.74 respectively. Senior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) (4:24.16) and Gornick (4:24.56) finished first and second in the mile and sophomore Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) and freshman Vincenzo Dal Pazzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) did the same at 800 meters with respective times of 2:01.38 and 2:01.55.
Other winners for Augustana were senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) with a 58' 2" in the weight throw, Madison with a 1:23.82 in the 600 and freshman Andrew Brimeyer (Senior HS, Dubuque, Iowa), who ran a 9:22.07 to win the 3000 meters.
Jasper (:23.16) and Graffagna (:23.19) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200. Senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) was second in the shot put with a heave of 49' 9¾". Freshman Josh Prosser (Eureka HS, Goodfield, Ill.) cleared 6' 2¾" to finish second in the high jump. Cline, in the 60 and freshman Kevin Gordy (Lincoln-Way West HS, Mokena, Ill.), in the long jump, each claimed third-place finishes. Cline ran a :7.24, while Gordy went 20' 2¼".
The Augustana men are next in action at the UW-Whitewater Invitational in Whitewater, Wisconsin on February 3 at 5:00 p.m.
